Riku knew he was their puppet. He always had, on some level. Trailing fingertips down Kairi's still face, spitting words he could never mean into the face of his best friend.
He was fixed fast to tracks of their making, careening towards an end that would be neither gentle nor fair. He had their blackness inside him, could manifest it as he liked into the very minions that had devoured Kairi's warmth. He knew that everything he did was to the bidding of strings, laced through his arms and legs so they could tug him along to any battlefield they wanted.
He wanted to scream, settled for bitter remarks and shouting instead.
And Maleficent would smile at him anyway, because so far the mouth of her marionette was the only rebellious part.
He had always known this, on some level.
So why now, looking spitefully into cornflower blue eyes, did it seem to take on such a literal meaning?
The Heartless obey me now, Sora. Now I have nothing to fear.
He could imagine Maleficent's taunting laugh. He really did have nothing to fear.
His heart was not just tender flesh and blood now. Wooden clockwork pieces tapped and turned with every beat. Puppet pieces. Imitations that a Heartless would not want.
Oh yes, he realized. He could not be safer from them.
