Nooj: If you're done playing, let's go.
Gippal: Chill out.
Nooj: Lost your nerve?
Gippal: Hey, we're talking about Vegnagun. How the heck do you fight that
thing? We can't even walk up to it without freakin' it out.
Nooj: Or making it mad. But I've got a plan.
Gippal: If it doesn't work?
Nooj: Death will be my apology.
Gippal: Whatever, man. When a Deathseeker dies, that's no apology. What about Leblanc?
Nooj: Well, she—

Suddenly he stopped and was silent.
"Cat got your tongue? What about LeBlanc? She's going to miss you if you off yourself."
"Shut up. Gippal. You don't have the first idea about ..."
"How can I if you won't talk about it. Come on, we've got a long way to go and might as well talk. You can trust me, after all we're going to risk our lives together."
The taller man nodded solemnly. "That's true and since we're not likely to come out of this alive, I guess it won't do any harm."
"So, give. What about LeBlanc?"
"She's a he." He said it flatly with no inflection at all, keeping his gaze firmly fixed on the horizon.
Gippal froze in place. "A what? You're kidding? That soft, smooth ..." He gestured with his hands. "No way, Noojster. I thought you didn't tell jokes."
"I don't. She... he's gone to a lot of trouble to make herself... himself - oh, hell, I'll just use the feminine - what you see. All sorts of magic and potions and I don't know what. Believe me, you're not nearly as surprised as I was."
Gippal looked at his companion, still stunned.
"Oh, for Ixion's sake, Gippal, close your mouth. A couple of years ago, not long after I was hurt, she caught me in a weak - ok, a drunken moment - and we ended up in bed. She hadn't had all the surgical work done then and ... try to imagine."
"I'm not sure I can. Although it would be interesting. Sort of like having both sexes in the same package. What'd you do?"
"Ran like a ... got away as fast as I could. What would you have done? Never mind; I know what you'd have done. Unlike you, I've never had a taste for boys."
"Your loss; your choice. So you got out of there?"
"Yes. And that's why she doesn't matter. My life and death are of no moment to her." Nooj limped steadily onward.
Gippal was unaccustomedly silent. Finally, he cleared his throat and said, "If it doesn't matter to her, why is she still chasing you? Damn, LeBlanc a tranny, I can't believe it."
"I have no idea why she's still interested. I've tried to make it clear that I'm not."
"But, that's another thing I don't understand. If she's a total woman now, why aren't you interested? Hell, Noojster, I've seen you with some women I wouldn't spit on and I'm not that particular. I never thought you were a bigot."
"You know, you have a point there." Nooj spoke slowly and thoughtfully. "I don't know why I've been avoiding her." He hummed to himself, a habit of his when he was thinking deeply. "I may have to reconsider. If she's a woman, then there's no logical reason not to bed her."
"Will you report back?"
"Certainly not! I may be a semi-bigot, but I'm still a gentleman." With a sniff, the Meyvn stalked forward. "Let's go rescue Baralai and get back. I'm curious now."
