Short Summary/Comments: one punishment, eight reactions.
D stands for Detention.
In Rikkai Dai Fuzoku, D also happens to stand for a number of other things, amongst which can be found the following:
Despair: not knowing the rules enough to bend them to your personal advantage. Akaya learned the lesson the hard way -just as his sempais did the year before; though they'd never admit to such as thing.
Danger: the thrill of dancing close to the fire, close enough to feel the flames licking your face. Sometimes you end up singeing your eyebrows.
Detachment: the analytical thought processes taking charge, discarding irrevelant fluctuation of moods/sensations. Making the most out of the four hours of confinement; an exercise in sociology. On rare occasions, Renji and Niou challenge each other silently, from the corners of the classroom.
Data: is a possible outcome of the former. It is not, however, the point. Both are too good at reading between the lines to require further footnotes.
Daydream: a more pleasant route of escape. Marui dreams of fantastic new bubblegum flavours, and long walks in the forest with Yukimura when they were younger.
Debasement: Sanada considers the punishment as ultimate proof of his failure, and will therefore never surrender to it. He abides by his own code, whose ideals may or may not match established standards.
Deceit: Niou who may be Yagyuu gets a taste of discipline while ultimately defeating the system. It is a satisfaction he will not indulge in often, but it is always delectable.
Diplomacy: tends to work better when your track record is immaculate. Jackal slips through the cracks with a warm smile and no one ever seems to complain.
Demonstration: what they all manage through tricks combined to years of experience and practice, Yukimura achieves by simply being. He glides through events and barriers and no one has figured out how he does it yet. But as long they all acknowledge it, the magic remains.
