For warm.summer.nights contest. I felt like angst.
Prompt: Ribbon
If I were to claim, it'd be lame.
The Growing Gap
Blue eyes tracked the stout boy from the 2nd story window. Said boy ran out to meet the orange obsessive girl. It just passed her birthday, and the chubby boy had gotten her a yellow-orange ribbon she promised to wear everyday. In response to this, she'd gotten the three boys ribbons that they promised to keep.
Olette wore her ribbon around her neck in a cute little bow everyday – mostly because Pence had gotten it for her. The same pair of eyes watched as the two below linked hands and walked off together. "They really are perfect for each other," he sighed to the empty space Pence was sitting in before he got up and ran to meet his girlfriend.
They've been going out for a couple weeks. Roxas hadn't noticed. There was a dull thud as his head hit the window, and he began thinking slowly to himself. His fingers wandered to the checkered black and white ribbon tied around his wrist.
"Black and white, because you always take sides. You're never in the middle," Olette said as she helped him tie the strip loosely in a tight knot. She'd gotten Hayner camouflage, since it matched nearly all his clothes, and he was told he easily covered his emotions and thoughts. Hayner chose to secure it around his ankle, as a good luck charm during his skating competitions. Her dearest Pence got an indigo shade of blue, to match his favorite bandana and because he was so easy-going he reminded Olette of a river – that she sewed on personally to his bandana.
The four ribbons seemed to be a sort of connection for all of them, through Roxas' eyes. But still, Roxas felt left behind. Olette and Pence were happily dating, and spent most of their time together during the weekends – leaving no time for buddies or group activities. Hayner, Roxas' own best friend, was always working so he could save up for that board he's been wanting. So…
Roxas was left alone. Watching their backs as they went their separate ways, only left to hold the ribbon that connects them all. He'd always believed that material items weren't very important in any sort of relationship. The boys hands tightened around the ribbon as he took in a breath. "They really are perfect for each other, and I'm happy for them. And Hayner needs that skateboard for his upcoming competition. But I still…" Another deep breath. "But I still miss my friends."
Roxas clutches his only connection, and hopes it's long enough to cross the growing gap.
All I have to say is… Cheer up, emo kid. :)
