A/N: This is the back story of a character I role play with. She is a Hylian alchemist, an alchemist like in FMA. Edited by my beta, SecretSparkle. Hugs to you!
The Laws of Equivalence
Prologue
"To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's first law of equivalent exchange."
Anari sighed and placed down the book she was reading. Glancing at the door and windows to make sure they were securely shut, she knelt down on the floor in front of the transmutation circle drawn there. In the center of the drawing were two piles of mixed substances.
"It's all here," Anari muttered, "I sure hope this works..." Outside, lightning flashed and there was a loud thunderclap. She resisted the urge to shiver as her sensitive ears picked up the soft pattering of rain on the roof.
Slowly, she lowered her hands to the floor. Concentrating, Anari felt energy flow from her chest through her body to the tips of her fingers and into the weave its way around the transmutation circle. The circle and piles began to crackle with blue energy and soon the entire room was bathed in electric blue. Anari let a hopeful smile show on her face as the piles began to shift.
...But...
As the piles began to take some shape, the blue crackling energy turned red and black. When the transmutation circle began to glow bright white, Anari got a sinking feeling that something had gone wrong.
The strangest sensation over came her body. It felt like part of her was leaving her body while part of it remained behind. The odd sensation lasted only for a minute and when it was over, she was sprawled out on the floor of her home.
Anari began to rise to her feet but collapsed because of a blinding pain that spread through every nerve in her body. She yelped as she fell and bit her lip to prevent the scream bubbling in her throat. She shifted onto her back to have a better view of what was causing the pain that racked her body. What she saw almost made the scream escape.
Her left arm and half of her right leg were completely gone.
What the hell?! Anari thought through the fog slowly clouding her mind, But...if I paid a price...then that must mean...! Using her remaining limbs, she turned to face the transmutation circle. The hope that she had was shattered into a million pieces when she saw what lay in the center.
Twisted and mangled far beyond recognition, were two bodies, rasping and wheezing.
Anari felt hot tears running down her cheeks before she knew she was crying. "Mom...?" she whispered, "Dad...?" The two...things...just continued their raspy breathing, and that was the straw that broke the camel's back. Her body began to shake with sobs and the scream that had been clawing at her throat tore free and sent a hair-raising screech into the night.
