On the Skarloey Railway, Duke was the official patriarch. He acted like a father to the engines by giving them advice and also a firm manner when necessary. He was very kind and fond of all the engines. His motto to them was 'that will never suit His Grace,' when they did something wrong.
One day, Duke was assigned to pull the picnic train that afternoon.
"I wouldn't let you down Sir!" He said proudly.
"I know you wouldn't, Duke." The Thin Controller told him kindly, before making away.
However, by the time the afternoon arrived, Duke was feeling unwell. His boiler ached and he found it difficult to focus.
...
"I'm afraid you can't pull the train old boy." His fireman told Duke sympathetically.
"But the train-" The old engine coughed.
"I know, but you have a fever and your boiler is out of shape."
So the Thin Controller was informed about the dilemma.
"I see. I'll arrange for another engine to take the train."
...
The Thin Controller chose Peter Sam to take the picnic train and was informed about what had happened to Duke.
"Poor Granpuff!" Peter Sam sighed. "I shall do my best to pull it as well as he would!"
So Peter Sam set off to pick up his coaches for the picnic train.
He waited patiently until his passengers got on-board and then he set off for the designated route. He was determined to please his father, so he went at a slow, gentle pace. He enjoyed the fresh air, the smell of cut grass and the flowers. He listened to the birds singing high above him and in the hedges by the line. The passengers murmured amongst themselves as the ride progressed.
...
That night, Peter Sam spoke to Duke.
"You did well today, son." Duke told him proudly.
"Thanks dad." The green engine replied happily.
