It was stupid and useless and completely pointless in Axel's much revered opinion. The concept of Nobodies that is. Xenmas could go on and on about it until Kingdom Hearts came crashing down on his head for all he cared. Axel didn't need a heart to know he was real. All he needed was his own approval.
To get that approval he would do anything. He would follow the orders of Saix and the oh-so-great Superior and their favor (that he, for the record, did not want) would serve to show how skilled he was. He'd take out those pushed into his line of fire (no pun intended unless it irritated people, then Axel would use all the puns in the world) and their lack of further existence would reinforce his continued one. His friendship with the newcomer would continue to progress at the same rate of the stirring in his chest.
In the end, he had come to "love" all those things he had taken to "feeling" lately. It was the same as the "irritation" he felt when he was woken up too early in the morning by singing coming from who knows where or the "disdain" he'd felt listening to all the lies and obscenities that traitor had spewed. Or like the "contentment" he got from eating ice cream and watching the sunset and the "satisfaction" once his stay at Castle Oblivion had finally ended.
In the end, Axel was perfectly fine as long as he stayed true to his own interests. Because as long as he did, he could stay real.
