Disclaimer: I wish, but no, I don't own the characters/movie.
She flies where she wishes now, free and complete once more. Her Beastie, her Aurora, her Queen, is to thank. Where her father had brought only destruction, the new monarch brings life; her loving nature and open smile a boon to all around her.
It seems only right that Maleficent repay such a gift with one of her own, and so she promises whenever Aurora may need her, she need only call for her godmother.
The title had been utterly absurd the first time she'd been addressed with it. Of course, before the dark days, a fairy would occasionally favor a human for one reason or another and grant them their childish desires, but she'd never considered herself such a fairy. And absolutely never wingless, never Maleficent the feared and reviled. But dear Beastie, she had seen what others could not in both kingdoms, what her father had seen before ambition and corruption, and for that she will remain eternally grateful.
Which is why, as she arcs gracefully through the clouds, she stops suddenly, hearing the call faintly on the wind. Without a second thought she banks, powerful wings propelling her towards the humans' castle.
Maleficent does not know what to expect when she lands softly on Aurora's balcony, but a whimpering girl sitting on her bed with red eyes and messy hair is not it.
Compelled by a power she does not fully understand, even after awakening the princess from her eternal slumber, she opens her arms without a word, and Aurora rushes into them.
Her wings wrap around them both instinctually, an extra protective measure from whatever has brought her godchild to tears.
"What has happened?" She whispers tenderly into the girl's golden hair, "Speak but a name and whomever has wronged you will suffer."
But Beastie, despite the new tears Maleficent feels soak her clothing, only shakes her head.
"No, no, no one has wronged me. I suppose, I have wronged myself if anything."
Maleficent frowns, confused, and ends the embrace to look upon her protected's face.
"I mean…" Aurora trails off, searching for a better explanation, "I mean…for the first time in forever, I am afraid I won't be enough. I never had to worry about ruling anything or anybody until now, and before now I had you and my Aunties to keep me safe-"
"I'd hardly give those imbeciles any cred-"
"Please, Godmother, they meant well," Aurora interrupts her. Their time before the curse had made plain Maleficent's disdain for the princess' keepers, but the girl would not hear a bad word against them nonetheless.
"I mean," Aurora continues, "that for the first time, I have all these responsibilities, and I am afraid that I will spoil the good graces I have with both kingdoms. But now I see it was silly to call you here over something so trivial and so I apologize profusely and-"
Whatever else she means to say is swept up in another hug of arms and wings, and Maleficent's fierce but kind words.
"You will never spoil anything, and you need never apologize for calling me. You are a new Queen, yes, but you are a better one. Better than any who have come before you, and time will only confirm what I know to be true. Before this time, however, know that I will remind you of this knowledge until your Beastie head accepts it."
Aurora giggles, and Maleficent smiles a small, soft smile before releasing her charge.
"That's my Beastie," she nods, tucking a clawed finger to bump Aurora's chin so her head stands high and proud once more.
The young Queen catches the hand, and squeezes it with a smile.
"That's my fairy godmother."
The Queen of Fairies and Humans' Fairy Godmother, Maleficent thinks, she quite likes the title.
