He knocked on her door to wake her. "Happy Christmas Hermione!" He chuckled as her pillow was flung at him and he noticed that she looked just as beautiful when she had just woken up as when she had made an effort.

He glanced over as she opened her presents eagerly as a small child and laughed as she thanked each person in turn. He noticed that as she reached his gift, she glanced over at him, a mixture of emotions on her porcelain face.

He watched her tentatively as her paper hat fell lazily over her eyes. She giggled and pushed it back up to rest on her head. He noticed how her eyes sparkled as she laughed and her smile illuminated the room.

He accidentally brushed her hand as they were clearing the large oak table and he smiled as she jumped at the contact. He noticed her cheeks flushing a deep pink and she avoided his gaze.

He sighed as she opened up to him about Ron over a game of Monopoly. She said that she was happy with him. She wasn't happy. He noticed a tear run down her soft cheek and he brushed it away. He knew he could help her.

He stroked her hair as he hugged her comfortingly. She sank in to the hug more than she should have done and she pulled away more reluctantly than was appropriate. He noticed that she had the faint aroma of strawberries. He liked the smell.

He brushed her cheek as she leaned in to kiss him softly and felt her smile into the kiss. He noticed that her lips were even softer than they appeared, that he could hear her heart pumping in his embrace.

He knew he would never be hers. He knew she couldn't do that to Ron, but he also knew that they could always have this day left in their memories. He noticed that it was a small consolation, but the pain was unbearable.

He felt empty as he saw them exchange a kiss underneath the mistletoe. He noticed that as she kissed him, she glanced at Charlie. He noticed that she was empty too. He noticed that heartbreak was so much worse in real life.

After this, Christmas for both of them was the anniversary of that day. Always the burden of what could have been. He prayed that they could fall out of love. His prayers remained unanswered.
