A/N: Just a short little oneshot for A Separate Peace. I have just finished it for the 100th time and wanted to give a tribute to it so...ENJOY!

They climbed up the tree, Gene only a few steps behind Phineas. A double jump, Finny had said. Naturally, Gene had gone along with it.

As they started to walk out onto the limb, a horrible feeling came over Gene. It was a dark feeling of jealousy and hate. It sparked a little voice in the back of Gene's mind that told him to shake the limb, to make Finny fall. Then, Finny will have gotten what he deserved.

Panicking, Gene pressed tight against the tree trunk and shook his head, trying to clear the dark thoughts that pushed against his mind.

From farther out on the limb, Finny turned and looked at Gene.

"You coming, buddy?" Finny asked, his crooked grin looking a little confused.

Gene gathered up all his wits and slowly began to inch out onto the limb towards Finny. "Y-yeah," he stuttered. "'Course."

And together they jumped.

Later that night, Gene and Finny lay in the dark dormitory. Gene tossed and turned on the bed, still a little scared by his earlier feelings for Finny.

"Gene?" Finny's voice called out into the darkness, from the other side of the bed.

Rolling onto his side, Gene tried to focus his vision onto Finny, even though he couldn't see without light.

"Yeah, Finny?"

"Are you okay? You seem a little...restless."

Gene hesitated before deciding to tell Finny everything. "It's just...something weird happened earlier."

He heard Finny get up from his bed and creep across the dorm. As Finny reached Gene's side of the room, Gene flipped on the light.

Finny sat on the edge of the bed, facing Gene, and said, "Tell me what happened. You've been acting strange all day, since the jump."

Sitting up, Gene spoke quietly. "When we were up in the tree..." he trailed off. "I don't know what came over me, Finny! I just...I just wanted to hurt you, but I don't know why!"

Finny turned towards Gene fully. "You don't...you don't hate me do you?"

"No!" Gene said fiercely. "It was just a stupid feeling! I wouldn't ever do anything to hurt you, Finny. I like you too much."

"Like me?" Finny raised an eyebrow. "You mean, like like me?"

Gene blushed slightly and looked down at his lap. "No. Not if it means we can't be friends."

Finny laughed. "Of course we can be friends! Even if you like like me."

He leaned closer to Gene, causing the other boy's breathing to stuttered and his heart to pound.

"Do you know why that is, Gene?"

Gene shook his head quickly, nervously.

Resting his forehead on Gene's lightly, Finny said, "Because I like like you, too."

Then quickly, softly, he pressed his lips onto Gene's.

And together they loved.
