Donny Boy
His eyes were blue, like Sophie's.
His head was covered in jet black hair, like Sky's.
He had a smile that was like his father's; charming.
His hands were tiny, and his fingers wrapped around his mother's thumb so perfectly.
Sophie held him close and she felt his heart beat, and the movement brought a smile to the new mother's face. It wasn't that long since he'd come into this world, delivered by his own grandmother because they couldn't get to the hospital quick enough. Donna was reminded of Sophie's birth; the way Sofia cared for her and got everything ready while helping Donna move from her spot on the floor onto the bed.
It was a total déjà vu moment that Donna would treasure forever. Sophie took a deep breath before looking out the window of the hospital, watching as birds fluttered by and hummed their usual song. Sitting there in front of it was her mother, sleeping soundly as soft snores escaped. Sky was out getting Sophie some Jell-O – cherry flavored, her favorite – and her fathers were on their way.
"What should your name be?" Ah. That big debate that she and Sky had to deal with in the past six months as her belly grew more and more. Rosie had suggested Mark, but neither Sophie or Sky were fans. There were so many names to pick from, but every name either didn't sound good or had connection to a past memory one of the two parents had bad experiences with. "How does Xavier sound?"
A soft cry and Sophie started to rub his tummy.
"Alright, so we're not a big fan of Xavier. What about Travis?"
Sophie gave a soft chuckle at the stink face her son was giving her. She knew that she and Sky didn't have to pick a name just yet. They could wait a couple of days, think it over, and then give him a name. Not everything had to happen just now. Sophie thought she heard her mother moving next to her, but it must've been next door, because Donna was still out. She quietly muttered, "Funny. I'm the one that gave birth and you're exhausted."
Sophie started to think about her own name, and how Donna named her after Sofia because the woman was there for her the entire duration of the pregnancy. Sofia had taken her in, treated her as her own, had given her shelter and a warm place to sleep. Even after, she'd continued until the day she took her last breath in a hospital bed on the mainland.
Why not keep the tradition ongoing? Donna had done so much for Sophie, especially as a single mom.
When Sophie was sick, Donna would put someone else in charge of the hotel, so she could be with Sophie. When Sophie was younger, six or seven, and her stomach was hurting so bad, Donna would lie with her and rub her stomach until it felt better. Donna would have someone make chicken noodle soup for her, and the two would watch re-runs of old sitcoms until one or both fell asleep.
Donna was always there to give her advice or be a shoulder to cry on, even when Sophie was at her worst. She was always there, like Sofia was. She never left like Sofia never did. Donna was Sophie's Sofia, especially in this moment.
"Don." Sophie crinkled her nose. "No, that doesn't sound right. Um, Donald? Donny?"
Her face split into a big grin, the corners of her mouth going from ear to ear. Donny Rymand.
It was perfect.
Donna snorted herself awake and looked over at Sophie who was just staring with a cheesy smile on her face. She rubbed her tired eyes, stood up, and walked over to Sophie. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Because you're my mom and I love you. That's why."
"I love you, too." She moved a strand of blonde hair out of Sophie's face. "Have you picked out a name yet?"
"Yes."
"Well, what is it?"
"Donny."
Donna started to tear up, realizing what her daughter had done. She pressed a soft kiss against Sophie's head before looking down at her grandson. "Well, Donny boy, get ready. This family is a crazy one."
It was a crazy, confusing, but loveable family.
Donny boy would be having the ride of his life.
This is the first of many one-shots centered on Donny and him growing up. I have a question. Which spelling do you prefer? Donny or Donnie? Personally, I like Donnie, but what do y'all think?
