Maybe

A/N: Hi there! Okay, I couldn't help writing this. It's a little scene I think would fit in nicely in New Moon. It takes place in the very early hours of the morning after Bella is found in the forest, after Edward leaves. Hope you enjoy.

Jacob's POV

I stared at the bonfire with uninterested eyes, watching the small flickering embers trail up from the ground and disappear into the sky. The mist in the air and the dampness of the ground didn't really seem to affect the blazing pile of logs, and the fire stood out brilliantly against the black sky and the light of the new moon.

I looked around at the people gathered here. There was Sam Uley, and a couple of his friends; I didn't know their names. There were a few other teenagers, too, but the crowd mainly comprised of the older generation of the tribe. The younger ones were excited and animated, while our elders seemed to look on with silent contentment.

I knew why they were celebrating. The Cullens were gone. And they were all far too happy about it. I heard eager rumours spread around the crowd, various explanations and theories about the real reason for their sudden departure. I shook my head a little. I had no particular feelings one way or the other about the Cullens – except perhaps one of them – and I never saw any reason to take them any other way than at face value. They seemed nice; misunderstood, definitely, but from what I had heard, Dr. Cullen was a good man. I sort of respected him.

At this moment in time, however, I could not respect his son. I hated him. I surprised myself at the use of the strong word, but it was definitely a sort of hate that I felt deep down in my gut. I kept asking myself the same question over and over: how could he do that?

I had picked up the gist of what had happened from Sam and other members of the search party. Edward had left her in the forest, alone, in the dark, and left forever. It was so... heartless. I thought back to the night of the prom, and the way the two of them were so inseparable. What had changed? She really loved him, I could see it in her eyes. And, as hard as it was for me to admit it, I knew he loved her too. He had loved her. And how could anyone not love her? She was... Bella.

Maybe my Dad was right, about one thing anyway. Maybe she should have listened to his advice and broken up with Edward. It would have saved her the heartache. It physically hurt to think of the pain she must be going through. I fought with myself against borrowing someone's car and getting down there to her. Sam had said she was sort of sleeping, half conscious. I shuddered at the thought. At least she wasn't alone. She had Charlie. She had me, even if she didn't know it...

I turned from the bonfire, heading away from the cliff. Maybe she would be okay.

Maybe...
