You're scared. You see him and he sees you. Maybe he's not real. Maybe you've finally lost it. Maybe it's because after 12 years of public school and 4 years of college, after all that learning, after long nights and short weeks learning the truth, the real life. Proving that all those movies and all those bogey men were fake. There is so much to be afraid of but not him. He's not real. And yet you see him. He just stares, not moving, not attacking just eyes on you.
You want to turn and run but you're scared. Scared of what will happen when your back is to him. When you can't see him. When only he can see you. It's now that you notice your heart pounding, heavy breathing, and sweaty palms. You haven't felt like this in so long.
Looking out your window all those years ago, watching the wind blow through the trees. The night calm. And then there's him, standing, starring, stalking you. He's tall. His head almost touching the street lamp. His white skin stands out against the night. He's long. Despite your fear you always stop to wonder where he gets his suits. But the thought of a tailor disappears when you lay eyes on his featureless face. No, hair, no nose, just dents where the eyes and mouth should be.
"Wh-who are you?" you ask the words stumbling on your tongue. You can't see it but you feel him smile. He spreads his arms our like a mother bird ushering in her chicks. Does he want to protect you? Was he the good guy all along? You take a few steps towards him before fear catches up to you. What are you doing? Where will he take you? Do you care? The world is so hard. And he want to protect you. You begin to move again. Without a sound or a movement he beckons you. Finally you stand beside him looking up at his blank face. He bends down and places a hand on your shoulder. You flinch but he doesn't hurt you. You're not scared anymore. Maybe he's not real. Maybe you've finally lost it. Maybe it's because after all that school all that learning and yet you still believe. You grab his hand like a child and he ushers you to where he took those children long ago. The ones that left you behind. You are no longer the one who got away. He finally found you. Forever.
