Prologue

It was time.

After a long month of incubation, filled with nervousness and eagerness the Peacocks' first laid egg was about to hatch. The news quickly spread throughout Gongmen City. Outside the palace tower's gates the citizens had all gathered, their gazes looking upwards as they awaited the arrival of their future ruler.

The Peacocks, Emperor Xiang and Empress Bao stood watching with great worry as a couple hen nurses clucking to each other checked their beloved egg over. According to Peacock tradition it had been painted with a detailed and very colourful design. But something was wrong.

After clucking among themselves the eldest of the hens walked over to the Peacocks. She bowed and looked up at them.

"Majesties, I'm sorry but the hatching is taking too long. I'm afraid that the chick is either too weak to break out or it is…"

"Is there anything you can do?" Empress Bao asked, her voice filled with fear and on the verge of breaking down. Her mate Emperor Xiang gently took a hold of her in his wings.

"Please midwife, do something! We have tried for so long for an egg." He pleaded. The elder hen nodded. She knew what was being asked without the Emperor saying it. The look on his face was enough. She had done it before quite a few times during her career as a midwife but the outcome was not a happy one. It was often too late by then.

The elder hen turned and returned to the brightly coloured egg. She gave a few orders to the other hens. They quickly set the egg upright and steadied it as she stepped forward and readied herself…and quickly and as hard as she could, pecked at the egg. It took a few good hard pecks to crack the shell and break it open.

Upon breaking the egg open, a tiny pale fragile form covered in egg fluid spilled out and onto the nest. The hens were all shocked by the chick's appearance but quickly worked over it, drying it and checking it over, but despite being very weak the chick let out a barely audible cry.

His parents stood still off to the side, still worried until at last the hens stepped aside and the elder hen stepped forward, in her wings she carried a small wrapped up bundle. She gently walked up to the Peacocks and with the same gentleness she handed the bundle over to Empress Bao. The two peacocks pulled back the blanket and gazed upon their chick with loving growing pride.

"Congratulates, your Majesties," the Elder Hen said, "You have a son."

Emperor Xiang looked to Bao who was silently crying tears of joy and he gently nuzzled her cheek and said as he gently stroked his son's tiny head with a feather.

"Shen. His name shall be Shen."

The pale chick wrapped up and held in his parents' wings chirped quietly.
