Hi all! This is my first attempt at writing a fanfiction. All constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.

Depending on the turnout for this story I'll decide if it's worth putting up the rest, so if you want me to continue this let me know.

This is rated T for now, it may be bumped up to M in later chapters.

Prologue

"It's not real, the ceiling; it's just bewitched to look like the night sky. I read about it in Hogwarts, A History." The girl next to her explained as she stared at the ceiling in wonder. She had been sitting with this girl on the boat ride from the train station and was now walking with her on their way to the far side of the room where all the teachers and headmaster sat on a raised dais. In front of the head table was an old tattered hat sitting atop a stool, which appeared to be where they were headed. "My name's Hermione by the way, Hermione Granger." The girl again spoke as they came to a stop, reaching to shake her hand. "I'm a muggle-born, but I've read all about the wizarding world."

"I'm Amaya Elric. I'm muggle-born too. I didn't even know about magic until I got my letter." Amaya introduced herself. It was true, she was just as shocked as the rest of the orphanage when an old man, she later found out was Headmaster Dumbledore, came into her room and told her of the wonders of the Wizarding World that she was now a part of. She had never known her parents so she just assumed they were muggles since she was in a muggle orphanage.

When they had all reached the dais and the hall had fallen silent, she was surprised to hear the old hat start to sing. It was a wondrous song of the magic of Hogwarts that left all the little first years staring in wonder by the time it ended. Once finished, the stern looking professor who had led them in moved to stand next to the hat.

"Now when I call your name you will come up, I will place the Sorting Hat on your head and you will be sorted into your houses." She stated before calling off names in alphabetical order from a long roll of parchment.

"I don't know where I'm going to be sorted. I think I'll be in Ravenclaw though." Amaya watched Hermione squirm next to her as she rambled about all the houses.

"Elric, Amaya!" She jumped when she heard her name, quickly moving up to the professor. She was so nervous she barely heard Hermione's quiet "good luck!" as she made her way to her fate. When she reached the stool, she slowly sat as Professor McGonagall set the hat on her head. She stifled a squeak as she heard a voice in her head.

"Ahh, you are a mystery aren't you? Not sure who you are or where you come from. I see an inquisitive mind with a thirst for knowledge, but plenty of courage and loyalty; kind and sensitive, but also quick and cunning. You would do well in all of the Houses but which would suit you best? It's all here in your head. Ahh, yes; I think you'll do well in the house of… Ravenclaw!" The last word rang throughout the hall and the students erupted in cheers as she happily took her place among her new housemates.

She couldn't wait for the school year to start. Even though Hermione was sorted into Gryffindor they promised to stay friends. She had a feeling that the next years of her life would be anything but boring and she knew that many new and exciting adventures were about to come her way.
