He should have said good-bye weeks ago. But saying 'good bye' so often felt like dying and dying was far too final for him to deal with right now. He couldn't handle the idea of finality and endings when it came to Roxas, which is why he had been putting off his good-bye for ages now.
Roxas was….different, special, he was the closest friend Axel had ever known. . This is what he got for befriending someone a year younger than him. Heartbreak. They had been putting off this moment for so long because it's impossible to imagine a day without your second half. It was like trying to imagine a day without one of your arms or legs or only one eye. Axel didn't like thinking about spending days without Roxas by his side.
But here he was. It was the absolute last chance he had to do it; one hour before he drove off to college. He walked up the hill to their spot, (it would always be their spot, they needed to have a plaque made), and saw the younger boy walking up from the other side. When they both met at the crest they stood in silence and simply stared at each other. He removed his hands from his pockets and crossed his arms, feeling a chill that wasn't really there.
"So…"
"This is awkward…"
They looked at each other before both bursting out in laughter. Fuck it, he thought to himself and stepped forward pulling Roxas into a hug.
"I'm going to miss you so much" he whispered into his hair.
"I know." He heard the other boy murmur back.
"It's only a few hours! And I'll be back on breaks, an-and Thanksgiving, and the occasional weekend!"
"I know."
"I didn't mean to pick one so far away! It's just this one didn't have my major! And-"
"Axel, I know." He pulled away and smiled sheepishly. They had gone over this conversation many times throughout Axel's final school year.
"Go and have a good time. Meet new friends, have a blast. Forget about me for a while and actually enjoy it, huh? You should be focusing on yourself and your new school, not worrying about me back home. I'll be here when you get back, doofus." Roxas stood on his tiptoes and kissed him on the mouth. "We can talk when you get back, Axel." The blonde retreated back down the hill, leaving him standing there, mouth flapping like a fish out of water. He stood there for a few minutes before he remembered how to walk back home again. It was going to be an interesting first week at college, to say the least.
Just a little something I banged out. It is not heavily edited or probably coherent but I'll continue it.
~Cheers
