Hey, all! This is my first real fanfiction, and I'm excited. I'm writing a few, but I'm so swamped with end-of-school stuff and more writing that I may not update too often. I will be far more active in the summer, though. I hope you enjoy my story!
Chapter 1: The Day Of
"Are they ready?"
"Yes. The tubes are sanitary and the cell is ready for fertilization."
"Are you sure this will…follow through, Cave?"
"I am absolutely sure this will work. We've been working on it for this long." answered Cave.
"But the statistics…" said a little assistant, a female with a very irritating habit of pessimism.
"Do not tell me the damn...DARN statistics, woman! I am Cave Johnson, I am a qualified scientist, and I am absolutely certain that this experiment will work!" he yelled.
Cave Johnson, the leader of Aperture Science, had a short temper. Frustrating him proved to be an austere process, his headstrong personality would appear in angry bursts quite often. This upset many facility members, and though he showed a choleric side frequently, his kinder side would transpire to those he had agitated.
"I…I'm sorry, Mr. Johnson…" said another lady, apologetic for her friend's irresponsibility.
"No, Caroline, you've done nothing wrong." He forgave his fair assistant. Caroline, as always, smiled and continued her duties.
Caroline was a pretty little thing. Her dainty physique and stylish dress made her the apple of every man's eye. Though she was friendly, she was not at all flirtatious. In fact, she was naïve. She hadn't the slightest notion as to the attraction everyone had to her elegant, amicable allure. Her demeanor was magnetic, and her brains surpassed her beauty, if that was even possible.
Her specialty had been in genetics. That was why she was here with Aperture; she worked in the Human Genetics Department. She quickly took the tube containing the ova and put it in the light, as she had done a million times.
Now, we have to wait. She thought. Where was that man?
After waiting for about ten minutes, the door burst open. In came a tall man with a package under his arm
"So...a little bird told me that there was something important today?" said the man with his signature British Accent.
"You're always making an entrance, Ben." said Cave. He let a smile cross his face at the sight of an old friend.
"Oh, you!" giggled Caroline. She embraced him and took the little package.
"So how is my lovely fiancée today?" asked Ben.
"I'm ecstatic! It's finally happening today." answered Caroline, obviously jumpy with excitement.
"You're joking? You're not joking, are you?" he said, wide-eyed and every bit as excited as Caroline.
"No, not at all! Today's the day it will finally work!" Caroline sang, walking with a skip in her step.
He followed her around the table and romantically waltzed around with her. Cave watched from the stairs. The pair was an entertaining show in itself. The way her lithe legs moved in sync with him, clumsy as he was, was an amusing sight. Cave stifled a laugh. He watched them be the goofy people they were, but then he began to think. How can you live with someone for your lifetime without wanting to kill them? He thought. I wonder what it feels like to love like that. No, Cave. Stop that! You're married…to science.
Just as the couple stopped dancing, another woman walked through the door.
Everyone looked at her in excitement. This was the beginning of a great experiment.
