Lay of Sundering and Union.

By Soul-Dust

Under the starlit twilight we have wandered long,

Beside silver pools that sings a wordless song.

The world was then free of evil things,

When hearts are true and sound we bring.

Under the starlit twilight we have never strayed,

From the path that Fate has arrayed.

The Path Eru made was smooth and wide,

And the Stars of Elbereth were forever our guides.

Under the starlit twilight we sang many songs,

With the words that we have devised long.

Of the beauty of this new wide world,

That save the Undying Land surpasses none.

Under the starlit twilight we marched on,

To a destiny that we made no song.

Deep is our love for the silver stars,

Therefore Quendi we named ourselves, the people of Stars.

As the age of stars wears on,

From Valinor a call was sound.

It called us out of the Darkness,

Towards It where beholds the Lights of the Trees.

East of the Misty Mountains we left our friends,

Whom we afterwards named Avari, the Unwillings.

Towards West our Hearts led us,

Where the Light beckons us on.

Into Beleriand we marched in,

A place of supreme Beauty.

Some of our dear friends we left there,

O Sindars and Laiquendi--Elves of Grey and Green.

Still on we marched,

To embrace the Lights we yearn to see.

Yet at the Hither Shores we halted,

For in front of us lies the uncrossable Sea.

But help unlooked for came that hour,

When our hearts swayed and sought to turn.

Ulmo the Sea Lord aided us,

And the Sea indeed we crossed.

Our dearest friends we left behind,

For when lost their Lord they lingered.

Great were our grieve to be sundered from them,

Therefore the Valar helped again.

The Teleri is the name of our Friends,

Elves of Water and Sea.

Ossë and Uinen they befriended,

And the Fairest Singers they came to be.

Yet some harkened to our prayers and came,

Upon an island uprooted for them.

But amid their journey a Voice was heard,

Calling to them, and filled with Grieve.

Ossë held them dear to heart,

And can not bear for them to depart.

To Ossë they also held great love,

For to stay at last they begged.

Halfway across they are rooted,

Still under the starlit twilight.

Yet within the sight of Aman they still are,

But they have broken our hearts.

In Aman we now dwells,

Flourishing amid the Lights of the Trees.

Vanyar is our name in Aman,

And Noldor, our new friends.

Under the starlit twilight we never walked again,

Though deep is our yearning for such.

Nor did we meet the Teleri again,

And endless sorrows filled our heart.

Yet we may meet again in the End of Days,

When Arda will be broken and gone.

Then we will meet in the Halls of Mandos,

The last union of Quendi, ere Arda wanes.
