Chapter 1
When Sara pulled up to the crime scene, she was surprised to see only one police car waiting for her. Upon entering the residence in which the body was found, she was greeted by a single police officer who was keeping watch over the body. True, this was a quiet residential area, but someone would have had to clear the perimeter and detain suspects while the other watched the body. The officer look up at her; "My partner got a called in sick tonight, so I came alone. Detective Brass and Ms. Willows called, they've been caught in traffic. Said for you to go ahead and start processing the body."
"Thanks.." She looked at his uniform. "Miller. Have you secured the scene?"
"Yep, but standing here I noticed a shed out back that I haven't looked in yet. If you're okay in here by yourself, I'll go check it out."
"Yeah, that's fine," said Sara distractedly as she knelt by the body. The victim had severe blunt force trauma to the skull and chest. That could have been caused by a number of things in the house, including a large rock collection. Sara had just started to examine the rocks when she heard a door close behind her.
"Hey Cath. Can you give me a hand?" She asked, still focusing on the rocks.
"Yea right Missy," a raspy voice. A cold metal was pushed into her skull. "Now you will do as I say or I'll blow your brains out, got it?" Sara nodded timidly. "Good girl. Give me your gun." Sara slowly reached out to her side and got a hold of the gun, and with quick reflexes turned at shot at the intruder. The bullet penetrated his stomach. His hand tightened on his gun and he fired; the bullet struck her in the shoulder.
Another figure growled and side kicked her in the ribs, sending her flying a few feet. She crashed into a display case and groaned - her head and shoulder hurt, and she knew she had a few cracked ribs already. The second intruder walked up to her and pointed a gun in her face; "This is for killing my partner." The gun cocked and she closed her eyes. This was it, she was going to die here. Die without living a life, die at a crime scene. Tears slipped down her cheeks and a gun fired. She winced and awaited for death, but it never came. She took an experimental breath and winced, her side hurt. But death wasn't supposed to hurt was it? She cracked open her eyes, and she saw a flash of gold-blond.
"Sara?" Catherine crouched down and put a hand on Sara's cheek. "Sara?"
Sara fully opened her eyes and blinked; "Cath?"
Catherine chuckled, "Hey there. You gave me quite a scare."
"Intruders-"
"Shh," Catherine cut her off. "They're dead." Sara nodded and closed her eyes. She was so tired. A hand gently patted her cheek. "Come on Sara stay awake. The ambulance will be here in a few."
"'m tired."
"I know baby, but you got to stay awake."
Sara's head slumped and she slipped into unconsciousness.
