Disclaimer: No, I don't own The Sisters Grimm or any of these characters except for Darren and Penelope. Do you think I would be sitting here writing on FanFiction if I did?
Sabrina grabbed her fallen jacket and ran out the school's front doors. She could still hear the cackling teenage voices, even from far away.
Crying silently, she slowed her step as she cut through the woods behind the school. No one knew about the shortcut… except Puck.
Puck, thought Sabrina. Just thinking him made the tears put out a little easier. He had really cared about her… not that jerk, Darren.
Darren was the one who had publicly embarrassed her earlier that day. After his girlfriend, Penelope, spilled Sabrina's secret to him, of course.
No, not the Everafter secret. The thought of such a small matter upsetting her made Sabrina laugh out loud. She liked the sound; it was better than her usual sobs. She wondered if she could ever get back to hearing her laughs everyday…
The sound of Sabrina's shoes crunching on the new fallen fall leaves had scared away a chipmunk, who scurried up a tree.
Penelope had told Darren that Sabrina liked him. Darren then announced this to the whole school… over the intercom.
That had been a huge reality check for Sabrina. She had realized--at that moment--that she was running away from the wrong people.
Ever since she found out about the Everafters, and especially what they had done to her now sleeping parents, she had been running to the human race, taking solace in kids her own age.
Sabrina now learned that she couldn't trust teenagers, either. Sabrina giggled slightly at that. Duh, she thought, grinning to herself.
The fifteen-year-old girl heard singing coming from behind her. She was too involved in her epiphany to recognize the voice.
I asked her to say,
But she wouldn't listen
She left before I had a chance to say
There were some people Sabrina could trust, though. Granny. Daphne. Puck.
Her family.
Every night you cry yourself to sleep, thinking
Why did this happen to me?
Why does every moment have to be so hard?
The beautifully sweet voice came closer.
It's not over tonight,
Just give me one more chance to make it right
I may not make it through the night,
I won't go home without you
Suddenly, the breath-taking singing stopped and was replaced by the crackling yodel of a 16-year-old boy.
Sabrina whipped around.
What she saw was a grinning Puck, but a different Puck… then Sabrina noticed.
A purplish bruise was covering his left eye.
Sabrina gave in to a watery smile when she saw the boom box in Puck's hand. A CD was still spinning inside it, but the pause button was pressed down.
Puck set the music player on the ground and came towards her.
Suddenly, Sabrina was enveloped in a hug by his surprisingly strong arms. The girl welcomed the embrace, and Puck steered her to a nearby rock, where they both took a seat.
The boy's arm around her shoulders, Sabrina's tears flowed freely.
Puck slowly and quietly explained his eye; apparently he told off Darren for hurting Sabrina. Then Darren got one of his big, buff friends to punch Puck.
Sabrina couldn't help but admire his bravery.
Puck went silent as the sky darkened into a warm red glow.
Maybe, just maybe, thought Sabrina, the person I needed was there all along.
Dedicated to one of my best friends, who had a somewhat similar experience.
