He tells her this, "I will protect you", the moment before his lips press to hers in a kiss that would've made her, missing, heart throb in her chest.

His lips, though, are cold and chapped and familiar; he reminds her, barely, of a life she had, once, a long, long time ago (when her name was Kairi).

He doesn't feel real—warm, breathing, alive—when he kisses her.

His fingers curl in her hair, teeth nipping at her open mouth; she tastes salty and cold, dead without a heart thumping, thumping, thumping between her birdcage ribs.

And—


She doesn't believe in him when he tells her that he will protect her.

She doesn't believe in something that doesn't exist.

(So she doesn't believe in herself.

She doesn't believe in him.)


And when he dies, she cries uncontrollably in her stone cage—high up in the tower—screaming: liar, liar, liar.
