Prologue 1: Astro (Tale of Gaia Before Gaia)
With every step, the trek became harder.
I lifted weary arms, and tired legs in a repetitive motion, for it was the only way to cleanse my soul. The sky was bright, as if it was a mockery of pathetic fallacy, instead choosing to prove opposite to the foul aura that had hung over me ever since…even now, I still don't want to talk about it. Snow pelted down around me, adding to my pessimistic mood.
To my left and right, there were men and women who I had once considered my friends. I had gathered them together in an attempt to fight a most pitiful war, a war that ultimately took not only many of them, but also a part of myself, and left me devoted to those I had left as my only form of repentance. Here was the brave clan of Twenty-Four Diamonds, our once bright flame reduced merely to the cinders. And even among those, many had extinguished, and turned back.
It was all that remained for me after the fighting that had enveloped all Crafts.
The use of magic had finally begun to take its desperate toll on me. The words of the kind administrator, Ghostly, reverberated around my head, kept sharp and memorable by the very power that was destroying me.
'Magic is a double-edged sword. You can do great things, but ultimately it will take you.'
And take him it did. And now, it seems I am not far off. Forsaken or abandoned by all but those who surrounded me now, as we wandered desperately the Plains of Acrisius. It was all that was left to us. Looking for salvation in the terror that ensued, for order within chaos.
Only a fool believes they can find such a thing.
The floor was littered with the bodies of those who had died in the last great conflict. Those who had lain down their lives in belief of an ultimate cause, to end the greatest evil that had ever faced this world since Ishinge himself. Mail, swords, but most of all blood lingered on the plains like a reminder of the disaster that I let happen. I vowed that it couldn't, but now it was one of two things killing me from the inside.
A light haze encircled my feet, making it difficult to see the ground without straining my eyes. It was undoubtedly the fog of war, although if it were anything else I would be extremely happy to see it. Maybe this was the way that the Plains preserved the silent sanctity of the dead.
Aaron gestured weakly to my left, his fatigued arm barely rising. We had been walking for days, making a dismal and unfulfilling camp when we needed to. But mostly, we had been silent as the grief overcame us each night as we begged for sleep, and failing that, the eternal void that had not yet claimed us.
The body he pointed out didn't seem any more significant than any of the others that surrounded it; the trampled mass of human life was equally depressing no matter where you looked. In the past, I would have taken the line of thought just to be glad that I myself had survived the conflict, but what was the point when many of those you knew had gone?
Their laughter, their tears, the secrets that they had confided in me, but most of all their dreams, came flooding back to me when my eyes were drawn to a set of Thaumaturge armour. I was certain that this was the body I was searching for.
The guild paused behind me, wary of approaching the body of the Thaumaturge.
Aaron rested a hand upon my shoulder and looked into my eyes.
"Astro, they need to go back. You've dragged them, and I, far enough."
The momentary contact was soon gone, as Aaron and the guild turned back, heading in the direction of Arcation manor. I turned my attention once again to the armour.
With renewed strength, I ran towards the body as if it were my final chance at redemption. As I reached it, I couldn't hold back any longer. I jerked as I shed many tears and sobbed uncontrollably, for here was clearly confirmation of what I had feared to be true from the start.
Just one more friend, dead. For surely, this was the body of-
Before I was able to retreat into my internal monologue of complete self-pity, my ear twitched. Surely not here, not now?
I had used magic to enhance my senses and reflexes in case we were attacked. I had promised Kay that I wouldn't let anything befall me, and I was damned if I were to break that promise. But more importantly than that, I had promised, and owed to all those that had come with me to keep them safe.
So, drawing on my magic, I used my brief amount of time in that calm before the storm to teleport the guild to safety, and ready myself for the onslaught. It was me they wanted, and the guild did not deserve to die for me.
The first swordsman was quick, coming from behind with a slash aimed at my left leg. I turned round at equal speed and parried the blow by reinforcing my arm with the strength of steel. The use of magic clawed at my heart, making it beat erratically, and I felt my fatigue increase.
I was sure the next blow was to end me, so I used a failsafe: Lifting one hand, I channeled raw energy to shut down the man's nervous system. He was incapacitated, but not dead, for there was to be no more bloodshed on that day.
Sadly, he wasn't alone.
Barely giving me time to react, two more materialised on either side of me, and I drew Doloris – the blade once known as Amicus that I had aptly renamed – from its sheath, and fell into a desperate defensive clash with the swordsmen. Their cold, black eyes and diamond shells revealed nothing that I could use to predict their movements, and maybe sway the course of the battle, and I knew that without magic, I would soon be forced to submit to the pressure they had put on me.
My survival instinct kicked in, and on impulse, I dislocated one man's throat with my mind. The other was too disorientated by this show to respond, and I used this opening to embed my blade in a chink in his enchanted armour. They were both dead before they hit the floor, destroyed by a ruthless killer that would torture himself for it, and for countless other misdeeds for the rest of his days.
The further use of magic was enough to make me stoop and fall, face into the dirt, beside the body I had worked so painstakingly to find. But the tempest of churning blood desperately trying to keep me alive received no reprieve as I felt the promise of death materialise behind me.
The endlings were quick. Too quick. Before I could understand what was happening, my arms were bound, my mind too exhausted to even consider an attack on them. Their gruesome faces looked down at me, the pitiful mortal who dared not even to consider opposing their might. Without considering the implications, I struggled against the bonds they had imposed upon my arms. The only reward was a jarring outburst of pain that stemmed from them through my whole body.
I turned my head up for a last glimpse before the end. I could see a man in the distance, but make out little else about him as the coming blizzard obscured my vision, and the endling raised his iron fist above my head.
The stars above me went out as the lights in my brain went dark.
What is the Convergence?
Well, after all that you're probably wondering what this story is about. Well, the title of the project is telling, "The Convergence", but what is in fact converging? Well, in story it's various worlds, but outside of that it's a crossover. Now, before you shit yourself and flee the building, expecting to see Spongebob and Tony Soprano, or worse yet, Shrek and Jesus (that's a thing and it happened... somehow) in a relationship by the next post, calm down. It's not that sort of crossover.
This is something quite different, and you probably guessed that because "Astro" isn't a canonical Minecraft character, or popular youtuber, and you have no clue who he is. This is one of those fanfictions. The ones where everyone is an OC and it has little to do with the original product or those surrounding it. This is because, in the realm of Minecraft fanfiction, believe it or not, there are stories to be had aside from those surrounding Steve or Youtubers. There is great potential for fantastical worlds to be created from the minimalism of the original game. Literally anything can be done, and has been done in the fandom beforehand, many times. This is compiling characters from several of the most successful fanfiction stories on the MCForums Literature subsection to fight a common foe. So, shall we continue?
