There was a desire burning within him. He couldn't quite put it into words, but there was one thing of which Kenshin Himura was certain. He would not be an innocent wanderer for much longer.
"Kenshin!" He turned around to see two young, bright faces beaming up at him. "Let's go play!" they chimed.
Kenshin set down the dishes and looked down at the two girls. "I'm sorry, Ayame and Suzume, but I simply have too many chores to do. We cannot make Miss Kaoru do everything now can we?"
The girls looked at each other. "Yes we can, Mr. Ken!"
Kenshin shrugged his shoulders and held up the dishes. The girls folded their arms and walked away grumpily. Kaoru watched from inside the house, and went out to Kenshin. "Oh, Kenshin, you didn't have to do that. I could have done the dishes while you played with the children."
He half-smiled but it didn't reach his eyes. "I might as well be some help while I can,"
"What do you mean, Kenshin?"
"I won't be here forever, Miss Kaoru, that I won't."
Kaoru paused. "You're not going to run off again like with Shishio, are you Kenshin?"
He sighed. "No, Miss Kaoru, it's not a matter of running off, it's just..."
"Kenshin! Kaoru! Time for lunch!" called Yahiko. They both started to walk into the dojo and Kaoru turned to face him again.
"You can't leave us, Kenshin," she whispered so quietly it was barely audible. "Please."
Kenshin looked Kaoru in the eyes. "I'm sorry, Miss Kaoru, but it may be out of my control."
