Jess isn't stupid. She can tell that her boyfriend has secrets, lots of them. She knows that most of them of are about his past, and that he will probably never tell her about them. She's okay with that. She knows he loves her and God knows she loves him. So she never comments on his excessive need for salt, or the weird design under the doormat, or even his extensive knowledge on weapons.

Jess also knows about was the nightmares. Of course she knows about the nightmares. She wakes up to him wiping tear tracks off his face in the mornings and she hears his whimpers and thrashing in the bed next to her. She does what any concerned girlfriend would do. She wakes him up and doesn't pry. He never talks about them, but he turns and wraps his arms around her and goes back to sleep. But on the really bad nights he leaves and doesn't come back to bed at all. Eventually she gets too curious and the next time he leaves she follows him. She watched as he gets a well-worn ACDC shirt from deep inside one of his drawers, pressing it against his nose and inhaling deeply before putting it on. He grabs a miniature recorder from a box under the bed, and pads downstairs into the living room. She follows him and leans on the doorframe as he turns it on.

A man singing Hey Jude starts playing in the small room as Sam falls on the couch. The singing is out of tune and soft, punctuated by a couple Shh's. It goes on and on, and somewhere in the background of the recording someone's breathing evens out and slows.

"Works every time," the man who was singing whispers at the end of the song. A small voice, half asleep says in a slurred voice, "G'nite Dean. Love you"

"I love you too Sammy. Now shut up and sleep." She hears the gentle press of lips on skin and thinks it might be the most beautiful sound in the world. When the recording stops, she looks at Sam on the couch and sees he's out like a light, arms wrapped around himself with a small smile on his face. She brushes away some wayward tears and pulls the blanket on the couch over the sleeping man on her couch. She brushes a kiss on his forehead and hears a mumbled "Love you Dean." She smiles and goes back to bed. No, Jess isn't stupid. She knows most of Sam's problems come from his past, but she knows that this Dean guy on the recording was quite possibly the only good thing about it. So she doesn't mention it when Sam gets up and kisses her good morning. But months later when she sees this Dean guy in her living room in the middle of the night, she doesn't kick up a fuss or fight it when Sam leaves. He'll take care of her Sam.
