Hi…! This is my first fan fiction story so please be nice. I hope this story is up to your standards but it might not be so please R&R. :)
Disclaimer: I don't own any of Stephanie Meyer's books or anyone else's for that matter. I don't own the characters (which is disappointing) but it can't be helped so just read and enjoy!
Marcus sat on his throne, his face as impassive as ever. He stared at his 'brothers' Aro and Caius, watching as they argued. He could feel the tension and anger in the air; it weighed down on him like a blanket, settling on his shoulders. He could see their thin bond of brotherhood wavering, thinning until it almost snapped. He sighed but still wasn't interested, or bothered about why they were arguing. Ever since Didyme died Marcus couldn't feel anything. She had been his world, his life, his very soul. And then she was gone. He could empathise with that Cullen, Edward, he could understand why he had come to them when he had assumed that his human was dead. Marcus had wanted to grant his wish, to ease his suffering but his brothers, especially Aro had refused. The image of Edward's haunted eyes and hollow face filled Marcus with a deep sadness and he knew that he himself had wanted to die, and would have if he wasn't such a coward. Edward was brave, braver than him, braver than his brothers, hell; he was probably braver than all the Volturi, including the guards! Marcus also knew that Edward had been well and truly, in love. He should know of all people. He had sensed the need, the desperate passion and love. The selfish desire. The need to protect. He had seen the thick bonds that had bound Edward to his human mate. It had confused him as to how a vampire, especially one so gifted and powerful, was so madly in love with a human. And for once in his life since his beloved mate had died he had felt something; shock. It had stirred something deep within him and now as he watched his two brothers, he remembered how it had been and he felt his eyes prick with unshed tears.
"I told you that we have to keep them, Caius. No matter what." Aro was saying his calm façade slipping, his smile turning down into a grimace.
"What, even if it endangers our species, endangers us?" Caius replied his face dark, and stormy. Aro's face turned shocked as he struggled for a good come back.
"Of course not!" He muttered his white, milky eyes lowering. "But that won't happen!"
Caius sighed, his snowy hair falling about his shoulders. He turned and then in a movement too quick for human eyes, he snarled at Aro and left the room. Aro turned to Marcus and his expression was priceless. Marcus' lips turned up slightly at the corners and with a start, Marcus realised that he was actually smiling!
"Can you believe that man, Marcus?" Aro said his face bewildered.
Marcus just stared at him, then after a moment he said in a blank emotionless voice.
" No." And swept out past Aro's motionless, frozen figure.
