"Is this absolutely necessary?" Ianto asked as he was pulled onto the ice rink by Jack.
"Yes, this is completely necessary!" Jack insisted. "I can't believe you've never gone ice skating before!"
"I never had any wish to," Ianto said, clinging to the railing on the edge of the ice with his right hand, his left holding onto Jack's for dear life. "One of my friends at school convinced me to try roller blading once when I was eleven. I fell and got a concussion. I saw no reason to repeat the experience on ice."
"But ice skating is so much fun!" Jack sing-songed. "And it's seen to be very romantic," he added, his tone of voice changing completely.
"It might be romantic if both people know how to skate. Romance is nowhere on my mind right now. I'm concentrating solely on not falling."
Jack looked down and noticed that Ianto wasn't skating at all, but walking with skates on. "C'mon, that's not how you do it! You've gotta glide."
"And how, exactly, do you propose I do that?" Ianto asked, glaring at Jack. Jack demonstrated, and Ianto reluctantly tried his best to mimic him. As he pushed his left foot out to try to "glide", as Jack put it, it caught Jack's skate. Jack tripped and tumbled to the ice, pulling Ianto down with him. Jack, in true Harkness fashion, managed to fall in such a way that Ianto landed on top of him. They stared at each other for a moment, faces so close that they were sharing breath. Jack leaned up and kissed Ianto, bringing warmth into both of them. A shiver ran through Ianto at the sudden heat in contrast to their cold environment.
However, before the kiss could deepen, a kid wearing hockey skates slid to a stop next to them, spraying slush into their faces. The boy laughed as he sped off again.
Jack and Ianto sputtered and raised themselves back to standing. "Another reason not to go ice skating," Ianto muttered.
Jack's face fell. "Are you really not enjoying yourself?"
"I don't know about this skating business," Ianto started. "But the falling wasn't too bad," he added with smile toward Jack.
Jack laughed. "Oh, good. Falling's the best part."
