the shadow of the moon brings wave after wave
AlwaysPadfoot
Rabastan stood in a shadowed corner of the hospital wing.
Remus was sleeping. The pale-faced Gryffindor looked peaceful; one would imagine someone would look more uncomfortable after transforming back from the full moon. Rabastan imagined the horrors of his body morphing, limbs stretching, and mind slipping away until you were nothing more than a mere animal.
That was what Remus had been keeping from Rabastan — he was a werewolf.
Rab didn't know how to feel. He'd been furious before he'd seen Madam Pomfrey and Remus crossing the grounds and listened to their conversation. Now he felt lost, caught in a wave that was about to crash on the shore and consume anything in it's path.
How could he not be angry when Remus hadn't trusted him enough to tell him? Then again, how could he be angry when Remus spent his life running from the moon?
The cogs all slid into place, whirring loudly inside Rabastan's head as Remus slept, unaware of his boyfriend's internal crisis. This was why Remus had been so reluctant to become a couple — reluctant to even become friends. This was why Remus was always so sick. Why hadn't Rabastan figured it out before? It would have been obvious, if he'd cared to entertain the idea that Remus was hiding something from him sooner.
Now he had a choice to make — one he didn't really want to make.
Rabastan could either leave, right now, and never look back, or he could begin to understand why Remus might have kept this from him. He could move out of the shadows he'd cast around himself and sit by his partner's bedside. He could wait for him to wake, take his hand, look down into Remus's amber eyes and say 'I know, but I don't care'.
Anything would be better than not making a decision at all.
Rabastan felt like he was suffocating under the weight of doing so. He simply had to pull himself together rather than let his thoughts wear him down and stop him from making a sensible decision. He had to do something — for Remus.
