I do not own anything that is owned by Square-Enix.
Balthier is the leading man. That is not up to debate.
The leading man acts, and is an expert at doing so. He is aware that this fact is true, because many people believe that he is just a sky pirate, probably a man who just saved his money up to by an airship. This is completely false, but it doesn't matter to the leading man. He pretends he isn't faking it, and this puts his audience in a state of awe, because his lying is so convincing.
The leading man in a play, after all, is supposed to be the best actor.
As you know, there are many props that any actor needs. Perhaps his are a bit unconventional-he has replaced fake guns and blanks for real weapons and bullets and he has never used faux blood. However, one particular prop is needed more than the rest, and this is the mask.
The leading man needs a mask to perform in front of any number of people. It is important that he hides things from those watching; the past that would receive more suspicion than anger if revealed, and the anger, resentment, and remorse he feels whenever he thinks about his past must be hidden. Those are the only things that the mask alters, as Balthier has had his charming personality long before he became a sky pirate.
He is just portraying a character that is very similar to him.
