THE SPANISH ESCAPE
The election is finalized and Cardinal Todeschini is named Pope Pius I with Cardinal Della Rovere as his Vice Chancellor. At his behest, immediately the Borgia family is evicted from the Vatican, and all the Italian states are seized into ownership of the papacy. Caterina Sforza is freed and is invited honorably to remain as consul to the new face of Roman leadership. Lucrezia awakens in Ferrara, at the home of Alfonso D'Este with no word of Cesare since his departure for Naples. She asks Alfonso to care for Giovanni and Louise and he obliges her. Leonardo Da Vinci, who has become employed by Alfonso, tells Lucrezia the rumors of Cesare's whereabouts - that he has been exiled in Spain to the Castle of Chinchilla de Montearagón. With no trace of Micheletto, Lucrezia begs for Da Vinci's assistance once more to find her brother. In prison, Cesare befriends John d'Albret, who has heard it rumored that they will be moved to another prison. He plans to escape during the transfer, and Cesare offers him help in exchange for his alliance once they are free. In transit, they are discovered and are pursued on the grounds. The rest of the prisoners try to escape and are killed by the guards. Chased back into the confines of the prison, Cesare is caught and confined again. He briskly tries to put up a fight as the guards beat him fiercely and confine him to a cell. Meanwhile, Cesare's capture provides a distraction for D'Albret to get away. In Ferrara, Alfonso's infatuation with Da Vinci becomes a burden to Lucrezia, and she continues to mourn the loss of her child. Despite his nature, she coerces Alfonso into a hasty wedding to meet her needs, using the only assets she has at her disposal. Meanwhile, Caterina Sforza exudes her influence on the state of Rome and makes an agreement with Della Rovere. In Spain, Cesare is sent to the torture chamber for his revolt and during his lashes, the guard is killed by another guard - Micheletto, who comes to aid his escape. Cesare admits that even if he escapes he is prepared for death, and asks Micheletto to see to it that Louise, Giovanni and Lucrezia are safe, if he dies. Micheletto discreetly confesses the source of his loyalty to Cesare. While breaking free, they are apprehended and Micheletto dies saving Cesare's life.
