The loss of a friend
Author's note: this is a sequel to DO AS I SAY OR THE HAT GETS IT
Don't read till you've read the first one!
He looked down at the grave. Under the grass, under the layers of soil and worms, lay his best friend.
Skulduggery didn't have many friends but this one had stayed by his side for many years and never left him without a good reason.
Well. That was a lie. The object didn't stand by his side at all. It didn't have legs.
Skulduggery knew the time would come one day, but this was too soon.
He lost people he loved. That was a fact of life.
First his friends in the war, then his family. And now, his hat.
He would never forgive Valkyrie for this- her action would cost her the friendship they so closely shared.
All that was left of the hat was a pile of ashes. Those were in a jar under the ground.
If he had eyes, he would be crying.
Val had been waiting for him on the pier.
That was where the exchange would take place.
A pile of gifts for his hat.
That was the deal.
As he reached her, he knew it wouldn't go as planned. Her face was holding a smile of pure evil. One that couldn't be trusted.
As he passed over the gifts, Val held out the hat.
Skulduggery put a gloved hand out for it but it was smacked away.
Then, before his eyes- Valkyrie grew a flame in her hand then put it onto the hat.
She had sniffed. Obviously enjoying the sent.
For her, it had been heaven.
For him, it had been torcher.
He missed the feel of the warm leather on his skull, the protection it seemed to give.
Without it, he felt naked.
He turned from the grave, remembering the words on the gravestone:
To a dear friend
One with as much elegance as its partner
One who stayed with me to the end
May you rest in pieces.
Those words were true.
He would miss the hat.
He would never speak to Valkyrie again.
"Have you finished Skulduggery?"
"Yes. I have. But what do you care?"
Damn!
He wasn't supposed to speak to her.
"We'll go to Ghastly's if you want."
"It would be the same."
"We could go for a cup of tea?"
"We could go and laugh in my face."
"Are you a mind reader?"
"I just know you to well."
He started to walk towards his car.
Hopefully Valkyrie would resist the temptation to blow that up as well.
Why did he ever agree to have her as a partner?
