Hello, y'all. Just me again! The fluff/plot bunnies attacked me the other night. And in standard plot bunny form, have not allowed me enough focus to do my homework! I'm a double major, I don't have time for this sort of being attacked by plot bunnies! I'm sorry for any typos, I proofread my work, but I miss stuff. You can always message me and I'll fix it.
It was their turn to make dinner.
"No, no, no! You can't mix this with this!" Kaylee was half-shouting at Simon within the confines of the small kitchen. "That is supposed to taste like chicken! You can't mix it with that!"
"What do you mean? It's all just protein, right?" Simon half-shouted back.
"No. Some of it tastes different! And chicken does not go with what is that, beef?"
"What does it matter?"
"It just does!"
She turned her back on him and continued cutting tomatoes for salad.
A long silence passed between them. Neither spoke, neither looked at each other.
Then there was a quiet sob from Kaylee.
"I'm sorry, Simon. There weren't no reason to yell at ya."
"It's alright, Kaylee. I shouldn't have yelled back." He held out his arms to her and wrapped her up in a hug.
"Simon, why do ya even like me? I ain't pretty or nothing, and I just yelled at ya over nothing. You grew up around fancy core girls, why would ya choose me?"
"Do you want a real answer?"
She nodded against his chest.
"Because you are a wonderful woman, Kaylee. The way your face lights up when you're working on Serenity; the way you smile at the little things; the way you are able to bounce back, even from really bad things, it's all enchanting. And you are pretty. So very pretty. And not just pretty, beautiful. I love you because you make me happy and are sunshine out in the black."
She smiled.
"And the ladies of the core, they're all wound up in the etiquette of it all. They aren't spontaneous, they're too afraid of breaking a rule. Or their nails. I've always had a thing for tomboys, they're much more fun to be around than the girls who can't play because their dress gets in the way."
"I love ya, Simon."
"I love you too, bao bei." He kissed her.
Just then, Mal walked in. "Kaylee, it's dinner time and...Do you have to do that in the kitchen right now? Some of us are hungry!"
"Sorry, cap'n we'll get right on it."
Now, plot bunnies, LEAVE ME ALONE! As always, review please I'm still on my epic quest to become a better writer. (I will admit this is slightly inspired by when my boyfriend said he had always found tomboys attractive. Simon and Kaylee are quite a bit like him and me, and then the plot bunnies picked up on potential idea and attacked.)
Stars and bolts,
far from the home i love
