Every time she looked at him, heard his voice, or even knew that he was close, she felt happier than she ever had in her entire life. All she could think of was the touch of those soft lips against her own, the short but oh so sweet kiss right before the battle of their lives. She loved him so unconditionally; it was a love that could fill the holes in her gaping heart. Just thinking about him brought a smile to her face.
But that kiss! Neither one had mentioned it since the day it happened, and Katara was dieing inside. She just wanted to go up to Aang and kiss him like she had kissed no one else before. But she never would. Of course, she had the courage to fight hundreds upon hundreds of fire benders with outrageous odds, but when it came to kissing Aang, she was reduced to a shy-faced little girl. She would never work up the courage, but every time she looked at him, it was all she could think about.
"Hey Katara."
Katara jumped and dropped the fruit she had been carrying. She turned around and saw Aang, smiling that cute smile of his with Momo sitting on his shoulder, as usual.
"What are doing hiding behind this bush?" Aang asked casually.
"I- I'm not hiding," Katara said quickly. "I was collecting fruit. We are running out of food, what else is new."
She bent down to pick down the fallen fruits while Aang also bent down to help her. Their hands brushed slightly as they both aimed for the same piece of brightly colored fruit. Katara turned beat red and quickly grabbed the rest of the fruit.
"See you later!" Katara called, rushing out of the vicinity. She saw a look of mingled hurt and confusion cross over Aang's face as she briefly looked behind her shoulder.
Katara sighed softly. She loved Aang so much that it often caused her heart to ache. And sometimes she even hated the fact that she was so infatuated with him. It scared her. She was afraid to fall too much in love with him in case she should…lose him.
The thought scared her so much because it was highly possible that Aang could…die. He would soon have to fight the Fire Lord, and Katara wasn't sure if he was ready. She wished that there were someone else who could take Aang's place in the upcoming battle, or at least someone who could help him fulfill his destiny. But, deep down inside, she knew that in the end, Aang would be all alone and would have defeat the Fire Lord by himself. That's how those destiny things worked; you are the only person you can count on in the end. Your friends can't help you when it is time to fulfill your destiny.
Katara clutched the fruit to her breast and tried not to cry. If something like that should ever happen to Aang, she didn't know what she would do. She had almost lost him after the Battle of Ba Sing Se, and she had almost lost complete control. But she couldn't decide what was worse; to never express her feelings and to wonder what could have been or to act on her feelings and to have it all ripped away from her in a single second.
She knew Aang's destiny, but she had a hard time figuring out her own. Was she supposed to end up with Aang? Would they get a happy ending like the stories? Or would everything burn up as the fire nation took over the entire world? Aang was a hero to the world, but he was also the hero of her heart. Would he be her destiny? Katara didn't know, and the future loomed before her as a dark abyss. She would just have to wait and see if she would get her happy ending.
