"Edward!" Winry screamed. Father's hand gripped the front of her shirt, dangling her high above the ground. She kicked and kicked but his grip never loosened. Ed looked on in horror from below, a mixture of fear and rage contorting his features. He took a step forward. His left leg touched ground and shattered. Ed collapsed heavily to the ground. He tried to prop himself up but his arm held the same fate as his leg. It too burst into thousands of tiny pieces, causing him once again to slam into the ground.
"EDWARD!" Winry's voice pierced the air. His head shot up just in time to see Father release his beloved friend from his grasp.
"WINRY!" he shrieked as she fell.
Ed jolted awake. He was in his bed lying on his side, facing away from Winry. Slowly he turned over so that he was looking at her. He sighed heavily with relief. It had only been a dream. And thankfully he had not woken her. Ed never liked to worry her with his nightmares. She had done enough worrying for him and Al far too long. He shifted back to the other side and attempted to go back to sleep, though he knew he probably would lie awake until morning. Little did he know he was not alone in lying awake. For Winry had woken up before he had. She had stirred into consciousness to find herself looking at Ed's back.
"Oh great," she mumbled, knowing that she would not be able to fall back asleep until he turned to face her again. To her surprise only minutes later, his body shuddered. She knew it had been a bad dream that caused him to wake. He started turning towards her so she shut her eyes and pretend she was still sleeping. She heard him sigh and turn away again.
"Ed, I know you're awake," she whispered. If they were both going to lie awake in bed they might as well do it together, she mused. He flipped over once more.
"I didn't wake you, did I?" he asked.
"No. I was already up." Ed's brows came together.
"Did you have a bad dream?" Winry had also suffered from nightmares. Many a time had Ed woken to her screaming in bed beside him. Clutching onto his chest she'd sob and recall dreams where everyone had left her or she'd actually gone through with killing Scar. It'd kill him if she'd had a nightmare and he had not been awake to console her.
"No," she replied. His worry lessened. "I just woke up, but then I couldn't fall back asleep causeā¦" She hesitated. For some reason it was embarrassing to admit that she could not fall asleep with Ed's back toward her. But he knew full well that she couldn't. The last thing she had seen of her parents were their backs. And countless times she'd watched his and Al's back walk off into the distance, not knowing if they would ever come back. He couldn't blame her, and it also comforted him to have her face be the last thing to see before sleeping.
"I know, Winry," he said as he scooted closer to her. He reached up to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear. He left his hand on her neck, thumb stroking her cheek. She smiled and leaned in to kiss him tenderly on the mouth. He returned the kiss happily. When they pulled apart, Winry wrapped her arms around his torso. He reciprocated and put his around her shoulders. They fell asleep in each others arms, forehead to forehead.
