Disclaimers: I own no one, and especially not these awesome characters.
Takes place before purgatory, before war at home.. basically, back when Eames and Goren had no real problems with each other... trust issues, what ever.
The rumors that surrounded him were of various subjects and came from many different people. Some were offended by him, others were jealous, and many more were skeptical. How could he be so smart and so strange at the same time? Was he crazy, or did he just act like it sometimes? Even after all these years, people were still wondering what made the big detective 'tick'. More incredible than the rumors about him, however, were how many there were of her.
When she first overheared someone talk about her, she was surprised that she was even on the list of topics. After many months of actually staying his partner, it seemed she had almost as many rumors and speculation surrounding her, as her partner. After years, the rumors of them sleeping together came and went, like the tides; much like their partnership, and later, friendship.
When she fought with him, laughed, joked, and communicated without words, people began to wonder what she saw in him. Both as a partner and as a person. Because no one truly knew Bobby. They all knew Detective Goren, but only a privileged few, knew Bobby. When he walked into a room, people watched, looking for something to give them a clue into how he thought. They thought that after so many years of hearing of him and working close to him, distance-wise, there had to be some way to understand him like his partner.
But after another year of watching them interact, all of their covert studying had yeilded no results. So their fame grew; their partnership put on a pedistal for all to admire. Because no one knew how they communicated so well, with so little actually spoken. The rumors then were that the key to their genius was in the gestures he made, and the way they bought the secrets of the case to light, always together.
But, she mused, if they had come to her, the rumors might have ended long ago. Because she, having gotten to know Bobby completely, and nonjudgmental, had the key to his genius. He had given her the key, without noticing, and she had kept it safe from jealous, prying eyes. The key to understanding their partnership didn't rest in his hand movements, her sarcasm, his words, nor her quick thinking. It lay in their eyes.
Once you can read a person's eyes and feelings, you understand them completely. The facts of the case, the little secrets he hides, the emotions she doesn't show; they are in their eyes. And by communicating through their eyes; their minds, they have no limits, no confusion.
So, she sits across him and meets his eyes and smiles. He is confused for a moment, but then catches the 'we have something they can't have' look in her eye and shakes his head, amused. She looks around at the other officers and knows the rumors are wrong. No matter how long they study Goren and Eames, they would never get how Bobby and Alex communicated.
So, short, I know, but I'm not used to writing in Alex's point of view.. or anyone in Criminal Intent for that matter... please review. My first Criminal Intent fic, so I would like to know how I'm doing. If you like SVU, please go to my profile and read my two stories: 'Breaking under silence' and 'Moment of Mourning'.
