JUST A KID AT HEART
By: Vanessa Sgroi
"Hey, Sam, give me a quarter," Dean demanded of his brother.
"What do you need a quarter for?"
"I just need it."
Sam shook his head. "No. Use your own."
"I don't have any change." Dean shrugged and waggled his hand. "C'mon, little brother, gimme a quarter."
Sam smirked, holding out his own hand. "Give me a dollar."
"Huh?"
"That's the deal—a dollar for a quarter."
Dean crossed his arms and scowled. "That's not fair!"
Sam's smirk turned into a full-fledged smile. "The rule of supply and demand." Sam wiggled his fingers. "C'mon, pay up!"
Dean rolled his eyes. "Fine." Digging out a crumpled dollar bill, he slapped it into Sam's waiting palm.
In return, Sam fished the desired coin from his pocket and handed it over.
As soon as the cool alloy hit his palm, Dean swung around, inserting the shiny coin into the gumball machine stationed outside the grocery store doors. He cranked the handle and watched a giant yellow gumball drop toward the dispensing door where he caught it and quickly lifted it to his mouth.
"All that for a gumball?" marveled Sam.
Dean shrugged, patting his chest. "The heart wants what the heart wants, Sammy."
