"I'll kill you."

It hadn't been a threat. Or a promise.

In retrospect she saw that. When she'd been a silly little teenage girl she hadn't though. She'd thought he wanted to kill her for knowing that he wasn't just an ordinary boy in their school; she thought he was afraid she wouldn't keep his secret. He'd known; or maybe he hadn't cared.

Either way, it wasn't a threat. It was a warning.

Looking down at the unconscious man in the hospital bed before her she wondered if she would have taken it had she realized then.

She couldn't picture how her life would have gone without him. She didn't know who she would be. He was the catalyst to her entire existence as she was now. The only thing she shared with the girl who found him on a beach was her name and that memory of the first time they met. From the moment he'd said those words she was no longer that little girl. The reaction had begun, and she would come out changed.

Her blue eyes closed for a second; she'd been up for almost three days. She wouldn't sleep while he was in the operating room, and she wouldn't sleep once he was out, not until he was awake; she had to protect him.

"Relena." And there he was, awake, just in time for her to feel tired. They always worked like that, didn't they? Dancing around like a balanced pair…Like an electron and a proton spinning around maintaining the existence of an atom; essentially, but never openly, dependent on each other. Never touching. Never mixing. Balancing but separate.

"Heero." She responded not opening her eyes. She felt old and worn. She was used to this feeling. It was relief. It was the release of the quite tension she'd built inside from the moment she realized he wasn't alright until he said her name like that and released her. It happened more often than she'd have liked. Dwelling on their lives being the way she liked could keep her busy for days though; there just wasn't time for that emotional self-indulgence.

"You never listen." A simple statement. He seemed to feel very little. She heard what she thought was a bit of agitation and worry behind it. She wanted to grin. Instead she remembered to exhale.

"I told you I would kill you." He finally said, staring directly at her in a way that would unnerve anyone else; she loved the intensity.

"You lied." She replied.

His right eyebrow rose.

"You told me you'd kill me, not save me."

"Complaining?" He asked, the shadow of a smirk dancing across is bruised face.

"Never."

"Sleep."

And so she sank down onto the cot they'd brought for her over a day ago when she refused to leave. He closed his eyes but she knew he wouldn't be sleeping. So now she could. He'd protect them both again so that she could go back to doing her job in their balance.

She sighed. "I'll kill you."
