Just a story I imagined following hearing those lines in a movie. Hikaru and Haruhi started dating and then run away together (which I suppose is a very un-Haruhi thing to do), but Hikaru has doubts.
Gazing out the window of their Tokyo flat, the best money could buy, Haruhi was entranced. On her left hand she wore a lovely, luminescent ring, one that she thought was too fancy and ridiculous, but loved all the same. In her unbroken reverie, she was admiring the crescent moon and stubborn stars fighting its way into the dusk. All the while, she was unaware that she too was being watched.
"I am a fool." thought Hikaru.
He had won, Haruhi was to be his wife tomorrow, but the victory was hollow. Watching those stars, Hikaru knew that Haruhi was thinking of the one Hikaru had battled so intensely with all these years, Tamaki. Though she was his, and though she had promised him time after time that it was he she loved in her frank manner, Hikaru could not believe her. In despair, he supposed that he had trapped her.
"You really want to date me?" she had asked, oblivious to his feelings.
What had followed was their first and most awkward date. Afterwards, Hikaru could not believe his luck, she had agreed to another, and another. Somehow she wound up with him, though Hikaru was sure it was Tamaki she wanted. In her good natured way, she must have lost the opportunity to be with the one she loved. Devil type he was, monster he was not.
Hikaru would not allow for Haruhi to hurt herself any longer, tonight he would let her go, though it pained him. Approaching her, he gazed at the moon that was growing ever brighter in the twilight. She looked to him and gave him a short smile. There was no need for words, for Hikaru could understand Haruhi through her glances. It was a nice night, she told him, and he agreed. Noticing Hikaru was not happy, Haruhi grew concerned.
"What's wrong?" she asked, putting a hand on his shoulder.
Hikaru turned away, conjuring up the most painful words he would ever have to say.
"I don't want it to be like this." he told her. "I want you to marry me because you love me, not because you feel like you love me."
"What do you mean?" asked Haruhi, who could be dense at times when it came to others feelings for her.
"If you would rather be with Tamaki, then please, I don't want to hold you back." he answered, feeling so pathetic and vulnerable.
Haruhi looked at Hikaru, her eyes harder than usual. Walking forward, she went around Hikaru to face him. In an act that was very strange for her, she leaned forward and cupped his face in her hands. Looking into his eyes, she moved forward, putting her mouth to his ear.
"You think you took me captive?" she asked, "In fact, you are my savior. I was like a bird in a golden cage. In freeing me you've captured my heart."
