Note: I don't own any of this stuff. It's a late night drabble. I just needed the idea out of my head and on paper. That about covers everything.

Rory lay dead on the floor. Amy sat crying by his side. The Doctor couldn't take it.

He had seen Amy lose Rory once before. That time, it was different though. That time she was only devastated for a moment until he was gone from her memory. Then, it was only the Doctor that knew why a single tear might run down her cheek in the middle of the night or why she would sometimes look around as if someone else should have been with them.

This time the devastation was complete. Amy would remember this day forever. The day she gave up on Rory. And the Doctor would remember it too. He would remember how pathetic she looked, on her knees, tears pouring down her face. He would remember how she sobbed.

She would hate herself for this. Hate herself to the point of losing herself. The Doctor knew Rory was a part of her. A part she couldn't bear to lose. Not again.

Then the Doctor realized something.

Rory was a part of him too.

Rory Williams was his companion. They both wanted to keep Amy safe. They both wanted to help people. They were The Doctor and The Nurse. They were a team just as he and Pond were a team.

Amy might have given up, but the Doctor would not. Not yet.

He knelt down beside his fallen friend and began the compressions once more. Amy's sobs grew louder as she watched him breathe his own air into Rory's lungs. He repeated the process. Over and over. He refused to stop. Refused to give up.

And suddenly, Rory's eyes flew open. He gasped for air.

The Doctor took a step back as Amy flew to Rory's arms.

As Rory held her, he whispered to her. "I knew you could do it Amy. I knew you could."

Amy looked up at the Doctor in alarm. He met her eyes and shook his head ever so slightly. She got the message.

"Rory, I'm so glad you're okay." Was all she said to her husband.

Neither would ever admit to what had happened. Rory never knew.

Life in the T.A.R.D.I.S. went on as usual.

Well, as usual as life can get in a blue police box that travels through time and space.
