Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale. I could see the slow, steady rise and fall of my mothers chest as she laid in the hospital bed. I couldn't help but feel numb after what I had witnessed tonight. So much blood along with the smell of death still plaguedmy
nostrils. Maybe I really am just unlucky. Or better yet, I'm cursed.I mean every year for the past fouryears, someone close to me either dies or disappears. Strange that it always seems to happen a week before my birthday. My dad died before my13th
birthday. My oldest brother was found dead in his car a week before I could turn 14. My older sister disappeared when Iwas about to reach 15.I feel as though my mother is next in line to be taken from me. So, yes I think I am totally cursed.
Knock! Knock! "Selah, could I speak to you for a moment?" A slight twangy voice whispered. Alady with red hair and glasses peeped her head into my mothers room. She startled me a little, snapping me out of my self pity. With some hesitation I stood
up from where I was sitting next to my mothers bed side. I met the unfamiliar women outside of my mothers room. Once face to face,I was able to get a betterlook at her. She stood at about 5'7, had long curly hair that was drawn back into
a bun. She wore a black blazerwith a matching pencil skirt ballet flats. She definitely wasn't a doctor or a nurse. "Selah, my name is Erynn Westfield and I am your mothers lawyer." With raised eyebrows, I couldn't help but stare at the woman.
" I stood there in silence for what seemed like hours until words finally left my mouth. " I didn't know my mother had a lawyer. How did you know that she was in the hospital?" I watched very closely as the woman formulated a response. " Well
Selah, it's my job to know these things about my clients." A eerie chill fell over my body as those words rolled off her tongue. "Anywho, the reason why I am here is to let you know that your mother devised a plan for your well-being in case
of a situation like the current one occurs." She continued on while walking over to a set of empty chairs in the hallway. She motioned for me to sit next to her. Still a little hesitant, I cautiously walked over to where she sat. Opening the briefcase
that she carried, she retrieved a stack of papers from it and handed them to me. " What's this?" I began looking through the papers. Being only 16 years old, I wasn't very familiar with important legal documents. " These are the guardianship
documents that your mother drafted up in our last meeting. Are you familiar with the woman's name on the first line? Mrs. Sonya Jacques?" My mind drew a blank, forcing me to silently shake my head no. "According to your mother, Sonya is your godmother.
She specifically stated that if anything were to happen, you are to go and stay with her. I already took the liberty contacting her. She'll be here any minute." My mothers lawyer continued on. Not really wanting hear anymore, I thanked the her and
headed back to my mothers room. She still laid there, just the way I had left her.
