Now that I've reread it, I find that it turned out quite well. Makes me sad and depressed though. Guess I was just thinking about how it could all end so badly.

And it was an ending.

It was an ending, but it was not the ending she'd wanted or even imagined. No, she had not wanted it this way at all. With his head in her lap, his eyes slowly closing and the simple knowledge that it was an ending.

She would have screamed if she could, but instead she bit her lip so hard that it bled as she let this boy die in her lap. No, this man die in her lap, because he was no longer a child, he'd seen too much and grown too far apart from her for him to be a child.

"Sakura…" he whispered and she leant closer to press her lips to his forehead. Pink locks barely brushed his face.

"Shush, Sasuke. I know," she whispered. She wished that she could do something, anything to save him. But he was too far-gone for her to heal, and her chakra was so low that all she would be able to do was draw out his suffering longer before she collapsed. It is the single worst thing about being a medic, accepting loss when it came.

His eyes closed but she knew he was still alive, as the steady rise and fall of his chest told her so. "I'm sorry Sakura." He told her, his eyes still closed. "I meant to come back…" he began to cough as he choked on his own blood.

She ran her fingers through his messy hair. She's pushed aside her heartache because this moment is for him. She'll have the rest of her life to mourn him but right now he is dying in her lap. "I know you did."

This man was her first love, and will likely be her only love. He never returned her feelings, but on the day he left she offered everything to him. She told him she'd come with him that it didn't matter where so long as she was with him.

He left her on the bench.

She wasted years chasing after him even though she knew he would never come back till he finished what he had set out to do. He would never come back until his brother was dead.

Now his brother is dead, but it's not supposed to be like this. Sasuke was supposed to return back home for her to comfort and care for. He is not supposed to be dying. But he is.

Her voice cracked as she spoke. "I love you, Sasuke." It will be the first and last time she will ever tell him this. His eyes open and he raised a hand to her face, caressing one cheek. The depths of his dark eyes soften.

"If it weren't like this," he coughed some more and she waited for him to continue, "maybe one day I would have loved you." She moved forward and her lips are now pressed desperately against his.

"I'm sorry," he whispered once more. Then his eyes close. And it is an ending, and she knows it.
