Yugi's coming out

I wanted to tackle a serious social issue that has only just now come to light in the mainstream media. I hope all who read this story feel comforted, encouraged, and empowered.

Sixteen year old Yugi Mutou stood outside the Game Shop he called home. His tiny shoulders squared and his magenta eyes set with uncertainty, and finality. Today was the day, today he was finally going to look his grandpa in the eye, and come clean about everything. No more hiding it from his family, or anyone.

"Are you nervous aibou? There is always tomorrow if you are not ready" Yami. Yugi smiled at his closest friend that looked so much like him

"To honest I don't think I'll ever be ready. But I can't keep this to myself anymore." Yugi's smile grew a bit more confident when he felt Yami's hand slip into his own.

"Well whatever comes next, just know that I'm here for you".

"Of course Yami" and with that being said, the pair crossed the threshold and into the living area.

Solomon Mutou age 72, sat in the small living room of his home and business, the old television blaired the 4:00 News, compensating for his failing elderly hearing. A bag of barbeque chips lay open on the dark wood table. The tv was so loud he hadn't noticed his grandson and friend approach.

"Grandpa-"

"AH, oh Yugi my its you. You shouldn't sneak up on an old man like that".

"I'm sorry if we startled you Mr. Mutou but Yugi here needs to speak with you" Solomon nodded and turned the television off.

"Of course, I wouldn't be a good grandparent if I don't listen to my grandsons worries. So, what is this about hm?"

Yugi and Yami sat down in the love seat adjacent to the sofa. The little teen took a moment to steady his breathing and his nerves "Grandpa I've been living a lie, and have been for a really long time. I just hope you don't shun me for what I'm about to tell you".

The wrinkles on Solomon's face deepened at his words. What was his grandson talking about when he said he was living a lie "What is it my boy?"

Yugi's head shot up as he practically shouted "Grandpa, I am cisgender!"

The old entrepreneur's hands flew to his mouth in shock "You are cisgendered…"

An uneasy silence threatened to engulf the room until Yami purposely cleared his throat "That is correct Mr. Mutou. Yugi here is cisgender, we both are as a matter of fact and have been our whole lives. He has been working up the courage to tell you this for days now".

Yugi'big eyes were turning watery with tears "Please Grandpa, don't hate me for being what I am".

Chips scattered to the floor as Solomon seized his grandson in a strong hug. There was a noticeable catch in his throat when he said "I love you Yugi, and I swear nothing will ever change that. Ever!"

"I love you too Grandpa" tears flowing freely down his face.

From his perch on the love seat, Yami smiled happily at the loving scene. Everything was going to be alright now. Everything was going to be alright.
