The Curse, or the Blessing
"Doctor?" Me asked. "Your companion didn't act the way I thought that she would."
"And what was that?" growled the Doctor, bound by the cuff on his right arm.
"I really thought that Clara would do something absolutely stupid, and take the Curse for herself, to save Rigsy." said Me.
"But that would've killed her," said the Doctor angrily. "You don't say that about people I like. People who say things like that tend to get me mad, and you don't want to see me when I'm mad."
"Doctor, where you're going, she was never coming with you," Me replied. "This is a journey that you must make on your own."
"What journey? Why must I make it on my own?" asked the Doctor.
"Because, you big idiot, the journey is all about you," she replied. "Confession. Finding who you are, that type of thing."
"Who did this?"
"I am only the lowest level," said Me. "I contracted with the Ravens to take a soul, and I was provided with this machine, which will take you somewhere. I will need your Confession Dial, I'm told you should have it on your person?"
Reluctantly, the Doctor handed over the dial.
"How does it work? What does it do?" asked Me.
"I have no clue," replied the Doctor. "It's supposed to go to my closest friend, on the occasion of my death."
He paused a second. "What do you mean, you've promised the Ravens a soul?"
"Easy," Mayor Me replied. "The whole thing about your pet human was to get you here. Now that Clara hasn't gone and done something stupid, I can take the Curse, and the World will be done with me, forever. Having an infinite lifespan with a finite memory is very tiring, you know. Humans weren't meant for this."
"But you'll die!" exclaimed the Doctor. "I chose this face to remind me to save as many people as I can! I chose the name to remind myself to save as many as I can! You can't do this!"
"But of course I can, Doctor," said Mayor Me. "Unless of course your alien tech has messed this up as well. The aliens will elect a new leader, one that will lead the street to prosperity. I will finally have my rest."
Mayor Me put her hand to Rigsy's back, and the Cursed Tattoo evaporated from him, and transferred itself to Mayor Me.
"Can't you remember who you used to be?" the Doctor exclaimed as she exited the building to face the raven.
"No, unfortunately," said Me. "You keep saying Ashildr, but your intervention has made it so that I cannot remember. My journals have the recollections of Me, so many versions of Me, since the beginning. Just like you, Doctor, so many lives, so many different people."
Mayor Me heard the caw of the Raven. It was coming for her. It hit her in the chest, and it was pain beyond belief. She then collapsed to the ground, and with her last breath saw the teleport activate.
If I survive, the Doctor will kill me for sending him there, thought Mayor Me with her last thought.
Another Immortal was dead.
