Rialle had invited Kyara out to see the merlee, and with one more glance at Caell and Jilian she had accepted, bounding after the silver-haired singer as she left the cave with Night Plume on her heals. When they had gone, Caell turned his head slightly to look at Jillian. She avoided his eyes, looking down at her feet. Her red hair hid her face.

"Jilian?" he asked softly, moving toward her. She turned away, wrapping her arms around herself. "What's wrong." Caell asked., reaching a hand toward her. She moved out of his reach without looking at him, as though able to sense his movement. "Jilian, what's the matter?" he took a step toward her again, putting his hands on her shoulders. She was facing away from him, and he couldn't see her face, but he could feel her shaking. He tried to calm her, soothe her with Challa, but before he'd sung more than a bar or two she spun to face him, pain in her eyes. His song broke off. "Jilian, tell me what's wrong, I'll fix it, I promise." he pleaded. His words seemed to break a barrier behind her eyes, and a single tear threaded its way down her cheek. With a sob, she tried to push past him, but her caught her arms gently. "Jilian."

More tears slipped down her cheeks and she buried her face against his shoulder, letting her tears flow. He held her gently in his arms, one hand in her scarlet hair, until she pulled back suddenly to stare up at him.

"What's wrong?" he asked again very gently.

"I-" she swallowed, cheeks scarlet with a mixture of embarrassment and pain, then finished in a rush, "I don't want you to go! Why did she have to sleep in the first place? Why couldn't you have just taken her home when it first happened?" she beat her hand against his chest, tears now streaming freely.

"Jilian." he caught her hands against his chest, holding them both beneath one of his and wiping away her tears with his free hand. She bowed her head, avoiding his eyes again, but he put his fingers gently under her chin and tilted her head up to look at him again, his warm brown eyes searching her face. Tenderly, he released her hands and pulled her close again, placing light kisses on her lips and forehead, holding her as though he never wanted to let go.

"Don't. Please don't cry for me." he murmured, lips against her hair. "You shouldn't cry for me."

She shook her head, and he felt her arms, which had been pinned between them, move to wrap around him, hands on his back.

"I can't." she mumbled, he rocked gently back and forth on his heals, face buried in her hair.

"Caell? Ca-ell! Jilian? Come see this!" Kyarra's voice broke through the shell of their private world, shattering it like the Starmaker's crystal. Jilian pulled back slightly from Caell, unwrapping one arm to reach up to his face. She brushed back a strand of blue hair that had fallen into his eyes. He gave a slight smile, leaned down and kissed her again, murmuring very softly as he pulled back,

"I won't leave you."
