The wolves' howls could be heard for miles. Each one was like a knife through your heart. Terrifying. The Blood Moon shone brightly above, casting an eerie light on the village.
Pepper moved silently, like the silence should not be disturbed. Twigs snapped lightly under her little red boots. She reached the riverbank. She could see the Moon's reflection in the sparkling water. She lightly touched it, making the reflection quiver. There was a rustle in the trees above her. She stood up straight, listening for even the slightest of movements.
"Who's there?" she whispered, suddenly afraid. "Who's there?" she said, stronger this time.
"Boo." Whispered a voice at her ear and she screamed and spun. Standing in front of her, was a boy, around her age, with black messy hair and big, brown eyes. "Oh, God! Aaron, that was mean."
He looked down. "Sorry."
"You could have given me a heart attack!" she screamed, trying to control her breathing.
"Are you done hyperventilating, Pepper?"
"No!" she yelled, and then felt stupid. "Why… Why did you bring me here?"
He smirked. "I have a surprise for you, now, turn around and close your eyes."
Pepper sighed, but couldn't help a smile spring to her face. She turned around, and closed her eyes. She felt Aaron come up behind her at her neck, so close she could feel his warm breath. She could feel soft and fuzzy material being placed on her shoulders, then strong hands tying a simple string around her neck. She though his hands stayed at her neck for a moment longer that necessary, not that she minded.
"Okay," Aaron whispered at her ear. "You can open your eyes now, if you want."
Pepper opened her eyes and looked down at herself. Draped over her shoulders, was a beautiful silk cape, the deepest shade of red. It was very light, and the simple red string made sure it stayed firm on her shoulders. She smiled and twirled, liking the way it the material swayed as she moved.
She looked at Aaron, who seemed to be very interested in his shoes. "Aaron, I love it!" she said, lost for words. "Thank you, I love it. And I love you, Aaron."
Aaron smiled at the ground, and hugged Pepper when she ran at him. The red silk felt good in-between his fingers and, it looked amazing on her, as everything did in his opinion. They stayed in each other's arms before a distance howl broke the silence between them.
Pepper sighed and wrapped her red cape tighter around her. Then she and Aaron headed home, leaves and twigs snapping as they went.
