The pen in John's hand came to a halt, the importance of the journal entry fading given the scene before him.
Dean explaining the harmless parts of their hunting gear to the curious toddler beside him, little Sammy listening in awe.
That life, that fate. It wasn't what he had wanted for them. His eldest growing up in one dreadful night. His eyes losing the impish sparkle, the only trace of childhood these days being the freckles on his nose.
John reminded himself daily that he would be okay. That his sons would be okay.
They were getting there.
