Midnight Memories

I sighed, Avatar and Katara were getting married today. As the Fire Lord, I was pretty much forced to attend. Even though I didn't want to. Personally, I'd rather swallow a platypus bear's liver than watch Katara marry him.

With a disgusted growl I turned away from the altar where they were making their vows and head towards the nearest bar. Immediately all eyes fell on me. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know I looked out of place in a tux with my rugged hair resting on my shoulders, get over it. I glared at one particular drunk who hastily looked away. Sitting on a stool I ordered a rum and coke to try and clear my head.

Katara, running through the forest, laughing.

Katara, standing on the docks, waving eagerly as the Fore Nation's fleet approaches the Southern Water Tribe.

Katara, squealing as I pin her to the couch, tickling her.

Katara, dancing with me at the annual ball.

Katara.

I thought back to the months we spent together as a couple. I know, shocking. But we really loved each other.

"Ah! Zuko! Stop! Zuko!" Katara giggled, trying to squirm out of my arms.

I leaned in close to her ear and whispered, "Not a chance."

Gently, I turned her around in my arms; then molded my lips to hers. She seemed to have no problem with that, kissing me in return. We broke away after a few heated moments. I touched my forehead to hers and breathed her name.

"Katara."

She threaded her fingers through my ebony hair, pulling my face down to hers and kissing me lightly. Groaning softly I leaned against her, pressing her back against the wall.

"Stop," she managed to whisper.

"Why?" I asked with a bemused smirk as I kissed just under her jaw. She gasped and tried to scowl at me.

"Someone might see us," Katara protested.

"So?"

"Zu-"

Her reply was cut short as I swept her up into by arms, twirling her around gently.

She squealed, then laughed and said, "Whoever thought that you, Zuko, could ever be this nice?"

"Well, I met you, love."

She blushed and I laughed, kissing her lightly on the lips.

"I love you, Katara of the Southern Water Tribe."

That was the last time I kissed her. It was nothing special, just your average boyfriend-girlfriend-make out-in-the-hallway type of kiss. I expected more of those in the upcoming years. I expected to marry her. Make her my Lady. But things change. People change.

I downed my drink and left without paying. I'd like to see them try and arrest the Fire Lord. I returned to the ceremony just in time to see them kiss. Again, I turned away ferociously. With one last parting glance at Katara I turned and left with my entourage, not bothering to stay for the reception.

I still loved her.

R&R please!
