Author's Note: This is inspired by Rules. The main character, Catherine, sometimes feels like no one pays attention to her, because her brother has autism. I felt the same way as her, because my brother has severe autism. So this is dedicated to him. Hope you like it.
Overshadowed
You know on some TV shows
That the oldest kid always overshadows the rest.
In my life, however, it's not the same.
Being the oldest, it's not always easy.
But when you have an autistic brother...
Let's just say it's even harder.
Most autistic kids can talk,
But my brother can't.
Some can read and write.
We think my brother can read,
But we'll never know.
People all around recognize him and talk to him.
As for me, I get a simple "hello."
If I'm lucky, maybe a "how are you?"
It's pretty clear that I'm living in my brother's shadow.
I felt lonely, sad, even angry.
But mostly lonely.
Most people don't know what it's like to be constantly overshadowed.
I used to think that, but it doesn't matter anymore.
The only things that matter is being there for him and loving him.
I'm older now, and I understand,
That being overshadowed isn't so bad.
