"Papa…I'm grateful. I know it hasn't been looking that way, but know this. All those times you were there. To feed me. To dress me. To show me your culture and welcome me not only as your colony but as your daughter, I never forgot the things you have taught me. For 333 years I've been fed with lies and fabrications. You didn't think far enough to see the day you finally realized your mistake. The mistake which led you on your knees before me….Remember? It used to be the other way around. I'd be crying on my knees and you'd cheer me up. Telling me everything would be alright. "
Maria pointed her bolo to her father's forehead. A small trail of blood rolled over Spain's eyes. Without her noticing, the blood mixed with salty water and fell down his chin. Spain gritted his teeth.
"Mahal kita Papa. That will never change. But you've made my people suffer so much and for that I must banish you. This is my land. I am no longer Las Islas Filipinas. I am no longer Maria de la Cruz Carriedo. I am the Pearl of the Orient Sea. The Republic of the Philippines. Ako si Maria de la Bonifacio-Cruz."
The bolo did not cut any deeper that it already has but instead feel on Spain's side leaving a red stain on the hilt of the bolo sword. Maria turned her back on him.
Spain's eyes widened in shock and looked at her.
"Maria…"
She didn't turn.
"All these years…as I've ruled over you…I knew you hated me."
Spain dragged his busted leg and tried to stand but did not have enough power on his legs and immediately fell on his backside.
"I saw the emptiness in your eyes when I would embrace you. You would simply reply with a kiss and a hug. Back then, I thought it was just a phase you were going through. I was blinded of glory and power that I didn't see the change within you. England was right. Making you my colony was the greatest and the worst decision I've made."
Spain stood up once more but then held on his knees for support. He weakly smiled as he saw a single tear sliding down Maria's check.
"I'm so happy mi hija. You've proven to me what you Filipinos are capable of. You have the greatest love for your people and I get to witness it firsthand. I know my apologies now are futile, but one day, as a nation, you will face so much misery that you can't breathe anymore. I will be there. When that day comes, I'll help you stand and rise again."
Spain finally had enough strength to support his legs with his broken poleaxe. He smiled weakly and the tears he had been holding were now flowing freely.
"This won't be the last goodbye mi hija, so, as your people would say, Paalam."
