Title Caterpillar

Summery This takes place during the first few episodes of season six when Nick had a mustache. What finally convinced him to eliminate this atrocity? Slight GD spoilers. Sort of CatNip if you squint.

Comments Everyone writes the Grissom shaving scene, but this one tends to be neglected. Leave it to me to think outside the box.

Gill Grissom was sorting through files and paperwork when Nick and Greg knocked on his open door. He looked up to see them each carrying files of their own.

"Yes, come in." He welcomed.

"Hey Gris," Greg said, leading the way and stepping into the office. "Do you have any idea where Ecklie is? We have these reports he wanted and he's not in his office."

"I don't keep track of Ecklie, sorry. You can leave those papers with me, though. He'll probably be here soon to nag me about my own paperwork."

"Thanks Grissom." Nick said and hastily took Greg's file and placed it along with his own on the out pile on the supervisor's desk. He stepped back towards the door and cleared his throat, a signal that he was ready to leave. Five months later, the bugs that adorned Grissom's office still made him feel uneasy. Greg though, seemed today to be unsympathetic to Nick's discomfort. He denied his unspoken request to flee the scene. Instead, he winked at his supervisor and touched the tip of his nose, a cue to begin a pre-rehearsed exchange of lines.

"Grissom," Greg over articulated, "I believe the décor of this room would be in much better balance with another caterpillar."

"I do believe you are correct." Grissom mimicked Greg's over articulated tone. "But where do you suppose I would get one?"

"Perhaps Nick would let you have the one he keeps under his nose." Greg cocked his head and grinned mischievously at Nick, who was starring at the floor.

"Funny," he mocked without looking up. "Very funny." He sighed and walked out of the room. Greg shrugged and followed Nick out the door.

Towards the end of the shift, Nick was taking a much-needed coffee break.

"Nick."

He heard Catherine say his name and turned away from the counter where he was pouring himself a cup of motor oil and faced his blond-haired co-worker.

"Nicky, do you know hat I'm going to do to you?"

"Nick raised an eyebrow. "Do I want to know?

Catherine took a step towards him and put her finger under his chin. "While you're sleeping, I'm going to shave about a half inch off each side of that mustache. Then when you wake up looking like Adolph Hitler, you'll be forced to shave the rest."

"I guess Grissom will have to translate, won't he?"

Catherine teasingly slapped him on the side of the head. He flinched as if he were in pain. "Get out of the way, you big baby. You're standing between a tired woman and coffee." She filled a mug with the fowl black liquid and leaned against the counter, shoulder to shoulder with Nick.

"After we finish our coffee, let's close out our cases and go home."

"Sounds like a good idea."

The next evening when Nick arrived at work, all eyes were glued to his upper lip. How could anyone not notice? When Nick walked into the conference room, already occupied by his teammates, Brass, Sophia, and Ecklie, he might as well have screamed "no more caterpillar." The mustache was gone.

"It was nice of you to give Grissom your caterpillar." Greg teased.

"Well, let's just say I don's speak German." They did not know what he meant, but they did not ask. They only commenced the meeting.

No one noticed Catherine's evil smirk.
