Title: Left Unspoken

Summary: Saya can't, won't doubt.

Rating: K+

Disclaimer: If only. Unfortunately, Blood+ is not mine, and as such, I can't claim Hagi for my own. Damn.

WARNINGS: Spoilers abound for the ending.

Something of a companion fic to Rewind… ish?

It was foolish to be worried and weepy, and Saya knew that. Hagi had always returned to her before, braving hellfire and damnation to serve her. It wasn't the time for tears. It wasn't the time to doubt. She couldn't, wouldn't.

She could still taste him on her mouth, a cool tang like the snow-covered evergreens they'd slept under once, a long long time ago, a girl and a man hiking through the snow on a mission in Russia.

She had expected something different, something perhaps like the copper-metal and salt tang of his blood, which she was accustomed to, or heat and passion, which was what every romance novel she'd ever picked up had told her of kisses, though the moment had hardly warranted it. Instead, it'd been soft and gentle, delicate like the brush of a butterfly's wing, and exactly what she'd wanted, needed.

It was acknowledgment, of the bond between them, of the tentative intimacy and affinity she sometimes felt for him, but never expected Hagi to admit to. Hagi was... Hagi. He served her, lived for her, but even then, he'd always been utterly reserved and reticent. That he would openly admit what he felt for her left her breathless and dizzy, a heady mixture of disbelief and longing coursing through her veins.

I love you.

Those three words suddenly comprised the entirety of her world. Instead of his usual detachment, there was now something… else. Something perhaps beyond their bond of Queen and Chevalier, beyond servant and master, long-time playmates and friends. Something Saya wanted with all her heart, everything she had. Hagi. Just Hagi.

That would be enough for her.

But now, finally, finally, when he had not taken that customary step back, and instead stepped forward, toward her, drawing her near...

He was gone. Just when she had needed him the most.

No, she wouldn't doubt him.

But then why, why had "I love you" sounded so much like "Good-bye?"

A/N: If you couldn't tell, this is after the last episode, after they return, and before Saya goes back into hibernation.

First story completed in a while. Feel free to offer suggestions/critique. I'd welcome it after my long-ass writer's block.
